Time as Succession
Yoga Sutras 4.33
Meaning · English
Sequence is the unbroken following of one moment by the next, each moment paired with a change. It is fully known only at the point where the changes reach their end.
Three words carry the sutra. Kshana is a moment, the smallest bit of time there is. Parinama is a change, a thing becoming otherwise. Krama is sequence, one thing following another without a gap. The sutra says that a moment and a change go together: wherever a change happens, a moment is spent. Krama is what you get when these are strung in a line. It is the thing we call time passing. The word aparanta means the far end, the limit. The sequence is grasped fully only when the changes arrive at their end. Patanjali says this because the last chapter is about kaivalya, aloneness, and a reader may ask what becomes of time there. Verse 4.32 says the changes of the gunas, the strands of nature, finish once their purpose is done. If the changes finish, so does the sequence built from them. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, gives the picture of new cloth. Its wearing out happens moment by moment, unseen, and is recognised only when it is worn through. For Vyasa the sequence shows itself at its end. The later commentators follow this line, and they treat time as the sequence of changes rather than a separate thing standing apart from them.
A flipbook. Each page is one still moment, and the drawing seems to move only because the pages turn in order. Moment, change and sequence are the pages, the flicker and the turning. When the last page falls, the motion is gone, and only the held book remains.
1. Sit for five minutes somewhere quiet today, with a clock out of sight. 2. Pick one sound, such as a fan, traffic or a bird, and follow it. Notice how each stretch of it ends as the next begins. 3. In the evening, name one small thing that was different at night from the morning, such as the light, your hunger or your mood. 4. Notice that you can only name the change by looking back, once it has already happened.
