The Work Is Done
Yoga Sutras 4.32
Meaning · English
Then the gunas, having served their purpose, complete their run of changes. The sequence of transformations comes to its end.
Three words carry this sutra. Guna means a strand or quality of nature; Patanjali takes mind and world to be woven of three such strands. Parinama means a change, a thing turning into another form. Krama means a sequence, one change following another in order. Samapti means completion, a proper ending. The plain sense: once the strands have served their purpose, their long run of changes is finished. The word kritartha, 'purpose fulfilled', is the hinge. The strands were never changing for no reason. Their changing served the one who sees, first giving experience, then showing the way to freedom. When both are done, nothing is left for them to do. Patanjali says this because the earlier sutras describe sorrow ending and knowledge becoming full. A reader may ask what then happens to nature's constant movement. The answer is that its task is complete. Vyasa's Bhashya says the strands, their purpose accomplished, cannot stay in being for even a moment, and the sequence of changes ends. Later commentators, such as Vachaspati Mishra, add that the strands go on for other seers who are not yet free, and end only for the one whose purpose is complete.
A cook sets out pots, a knife, a fire, and works until the meal is on the table. When the people have eaten, the pots are washed and put away, the fire is let go out. The kitchen was busy for a reason. The strands of nature are the kitchen, and the meal is experience and freedom.
1. Tonight, pick one task you have finished today, even a small one such as a washed cup or a sent message. 2. Stand or sit for one minute and look at it. Notice whether you still reach for it, check it, or rework it in your mind. 3. Where the work is truly done, let it be done, and notice what the mind does when it has nothing left to handle.
