Knowing Without Remainder

Yoga Sutras 4.31

Meaning · English

Then, with every covering and stain gone, knowledge is without limit, and what is left to be known is small.

Three terms carry the sutra. Avarana is a covering, from the root meaning to cover or enclose. Mala is a stain, a dirt that clings. Jnana is knowing, and ananta is without end, an-anta, no boundary. Jneya is what can be known, and alpa is little. The plain sense: when the coverings and stains are gone from the knowing, knowing has no edge. Set beside that, the knowable seems small. Patanjali does not say knowing grows. He says what blocked it is removed, and then it is vast. Why say it here? The earlier sutras describe the mind clouded by afflictions and the labour of action. Sutra 4.30 has just said those fall away. This sutra answers the next question: what is left of knowing once they are gone? Everything the cloud was hiding. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the covering as the tamas and rajas that hide the clear knowing, and says that when it is lifted, the knowing is unbounded, like the sky, and the world of things appears small beside it, like a glowworm in the sky. The later commentators mostly follow him, differing chiefly in how they describe the stains.

Picture a window caked with a winter's dust. Through it you see a smear of grey and a few shapes. Wipe it clean and the whole hillside is there, far past the glass. The window never made the view. The dust only hid it, and the wiping took the dust away.

1. Once today, when you are alone and a little unsettled, name one thing that is clouding your view: a worry, a grudge, a hurry. Say it plainly, in one sentence. 2. Sit for five minutes with that one covering named and do not argue with it. Notice what is still clear behind it: sounds, light, the plain fact of being here. 3. Before bed, note whether anything seemed smaller once it was named. Write down only what you saw, not what you hoped to see.
