Yoga Sutras 4.30

Meaning · English

From that, affliction and the pull of action come to an end.

Three terms carry the sutra. Klesha comes from a root for causing pain: an affliction, a stain on the mind. Patanjali names these elsewhere as ignorance, ego-sense, attraction, aversion and clinging to life. Karma is action, and with it the habit of acting from those stains and the results that return. Nivritti is a turning back, a ceasing, a stopping of something that had been running. Tatah means 'from that': from the cloud-like samadhi of 4.29. So the whole sutra reads: out of that state, the afflictions and the compulsion of action stop running. The problem it answers is the wheel of pain and doing that the earlier chapters describe. Patanjali has taught that afflictions drive action, and action sows more of them. Discriminating insight, held steady, is what cuts the wheel. Vyasa's Bhashya takes this as release while still living: the afflictions and the seeds of karma are cut at the root, so they no longer bind the person. The commentators agree on this and differ mainly in how they describe what remains afterward.

A mill wheel keeps turning after the stream is diverted, slower each round, because the water that drove it is gone. The afflictions are the stream, karma the wheel. Once the source is cut, the turning loses its push and settles.

1. Tonight, sit alone for five minutes with a task you have been dreading or pushing at. 2. Ask what feeling sits under the pushing: fear, wanting, irritation, or a need to be seen. Name it in a plain word. 3. Notice whether the action still feels as urgent once the feeling has a name. Only notice. Do not decide anything yet.
