Wanting Nothing, Even Insight

Yoga Sutras 4.29

Meaning · English

For one who takes no gain even from high insight, and who sees the difference between seer and seen in every way, samadhi comes as the cloud of dharma.

Take four words. Prasamkhyana is high insight, a ripe and clear way of seeing. Akusida means having no appetite, no lending of interest. Viveka-khyati is discerning sight, the clear seeing of the difference between the seer and what is seen. Dharma-megha is a cloud of dharma, a cloud that rains. The sutra says this. Even insight can become something to hold and be proud of. The one who takes no gain from it, who stays unattached even there, sees the seer apart from the seen in every way and in every case. For that person samadhi arrives as the dharma-megha. Patanjali says this because 4.27 and 4.28 warn that old impressions still push up other thoughts in the gaps. Wanting to keep insight is one more such pull. Only when the grasping stops, even toward the best thing, is the separation of seer and seen complete. That is the aloneness this chapter is heading toward. Vyasa reads the verse as describing the one who does not crave even the highest attainment. For him, discerning sight alone is left, and the samadhi then rains out all that can be known. The commentators differ a little over how to read dharma here, as virtue or as the nature of things, but they agree on the stopping of desire.

A farmer's field after a long dry spell. A heavy cloud sits above it and does nothing to hold the water back. It simply lets go and rains. The cloud is insight with no hand gripping it: nothing kept for itself, so everything it carries is given out.

1. Choose one small thing you understood well today, such as a problem solved or a fair judgment you made. 2. Sit for two minutes in the evening and notice whether you want to own it, repeat it, or be seen as someone who knows it. 3. Let that wish be there without acting on it. Say nothing about the insight to anyone for the rest of the evening. 4. Notice, without judging, what remains once the wanting is quiet.
