Yoga Sutras 4.28
Meaning · English
The removal of these is taught in the same way as the removal of the afflictions was taught.
Three words carry it. Hana is a leaving behind, a giving up. Klesha is an affliction, a trouble that stains the mind and keeps it tied to sorrow. Samskara is an impression, a groove left by past experience. The sutra says the stray thoughts of the previous verse, and the impressions they rise from, are to be left behind the way the afflictions were. Every word is accounted for: of these, the removal, as with the afflictions, it was said. Patanjali does not give a new method. He points back to one already given. The problem is this. Even in a mind bending toward aloneness, old impressions push up through the gaps. A student might think they need a separate remedy. Patanjali answers that they do not. He treats the impressions as a finer layer of the same trouble and sends the student back to the earlier teaching on the afflictions. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads it this way: the impressions are to be undone like the afflictions, until they can no longer sprout, as a scorched seed cannot. Later commentators mostly follow him in taking the comparison as a matter of method.
A gardener who only mows a weed sees it return within the week. A gardener who pulls it out by the root, and does it again each time a shoot appears, finds the patch slowly bare. Stray thoughts are the green shoot. The impressions are the root. The method for the root is the one already known.
1. Sit quietly for five minutes today, somewhere you will not be interrupted. 2. When a stray thought pulls you away, name it in one word, such as worry, plan or memory, and notice what past event it seems to come from. 3. Do not follow it. Return to your breath or to a single point of attention. 4. Repeat for the whole five minutes, and stop when the time is up.
