Gaps Let Old Thoughts In

Yoga Sutras 4.27

Meaning · English

In the gaps of that discernment, other thoughts rise up. They come from the stored impressions left by what has gone before.

Take the words one at a time. Chidra is a crack or a hole, a gap in something that is otherwise whole. Pratyaya is what appears in awareness: a notion, a thought, a content. Antara means other, a different one. Samskara is an impression, a groove left in the mind-field by past experience and action. The ending means "from". Patanjali says that when the steady discernment of 4.25 loosens, even for a moment, other thoughts come through the gap. They do not come from nowhere. They come from the impressions already stored. Why say this? Because 4.26 describes a being bent toward aloneness, and a reader might think the bend is complete. Patanjali answers that it is not yet. Old impressions are still there and still active. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the gaps as the moments when thoughts like "I" and "mine" rise again out of those impressions. The later commentators generally follow him. The sutra also prepares the next one, which speaks of overcoming these thoughts.

A paving stone path looks solid, yet a weed pushes up through a crack after the rain. The seed was in the soil long before. The path is the steady discernment, the crack is the lapse in it, and the weed is the old thought rising from a stored impression.

1. Once today, at a quiet moment, notice the instant your attention slips from what you were doing, such as a task, a conversation or a few breaths. 2. Ask where the stray thought came from. Is it a worry, a habit, an old memory? 3. Name it in one word, such as "plan" or "grudge", and go back to what you were doing. 4. In the evening, recall which kind of thought came back most often.
