Now, the Enquiry into Brahman
Brahma Sutras 1.1.1
Meaning · English
Now, therefore, the enquiry into Brahman.
The sutra has three working words. Atha, 'now', marks a starting point. Atah, 'therefore', gives a reason. Brahmajijnasa is the wish to know Brahman, the one reality that Vedanta takes to underlie the world. Shankara reads 'now' as 'after something', not as a mere auspicious opening. Study of the Vedic texts alone is not enough, since that is shared with the earlier enquiry into ritual duty. So he names a prior readiness: telling the lasting from the passing, losing appetite for pleasure here and hereafter, inner calm and self-control, and a real longing for freedom. 'Therefore' means the Veda itself teaches that ritual results are finite, and what is limited sends one looking for what is not. Shankara adds that Brahman is already existent, so it is to be known, not performed. Ramanuja and Madhva also take the sutra as opening the enquiry, but read the link to ritual study and the nature of Brahman differently.
A traveller who has crossed a hot plain and drunk from every roadside well finds each one dry by evening. Only then does he ask where the spring itself is. The wells are the results of ritual and pleasure, which run out. The spring is Brahman, sought once the wells are seen to fail.
Modern philosophy would call this the question of where enquiry starts: what motivates a search for ultimate reality, and what a person must already have in place. Cognitive science and psychology agree that curiosity about deep questions tends to follow dissatisfaction, and that calm attention helps any inquiry. The claim that one needs detachment before knowing is a different matter. Epistemology usually asks for evidence and sound reasoning, not temperament, so here the old view makes a stronger demand than most modern accounts. Whether there is a single reality underlying experience, as monism holds, is debated among idealists, physicalists and others. Science can neither confirm nor refute it.
