Scripture as Brahman's Source
Brahma Sutras 1.1.3
Meaning · English
Because scripture is its source, or because Brahman is the source of scripture, Brahman is known through it.
The question: how can anyone know Brahman, the cause of the world named in the previous sutra? The sutra answers with one compound word, which can be read two ways. Shankara gives both. First, Brahman is the yoni, the source or womb, of scripture: the Rigveda and the other Vedas, vast and lighting up every subject, could only come from one who knows everything. A grammar comes from a grammarian who knows more than the book holds; how much more, then, this storehouse of knowledge. Second, scripture is the yoni, the means of knowing, for Brahman. The cause of the world is reached through scripture itself, not by inference alone. Shankara says the sutra was needed because the earlier one only hinted at scripture. Ramanuja and Madhva also take scripture as the way to Brahman, though they differ on what it then teaches.
Think of a map of a city so detailed that it shows every lane, well and shortcut. You would never guess it came from someone who had not walked the place. The map is a trusted way to the city, and its richness points back to a maker who knew it fully. Scripture stands to Brahman as that map: a guide to it and a sign of its source.
Epistemology asks the same thing: what counts as a source of knowledge? Empiricism trusts observation and reasoning, and Hume showed how little pure inference can say about a world's ultimate cause. The sutra answers by granting testimony a role, as we rely on textbooks and experts for things we cannot check ourselves. That much holds up. What does not follow is the step from a text's richness to an all-knowing author. Modern scholarship studies the Vedas as compiled by many human hands over centuries, and science has no way to test a claim about a cause of the whole world. Whether any text can reveal what observation cannot remains a live philosophical dispute, not a settled finding.
