Harmony of the Upanishads

Brahma Sutras 1.1.4

Meaning · English

But that Brahman is to be known from scripture, because of the agreement of all the Upanishadic texts in pointing to it.

The question behind the sutra: if Brahman is known through scripture, what do the Upanishads actually teach? They speak of many things: rituals, gods, a creator, the self, a person who acts. Samanvaya means 'coherent agreement', the way many pieces of text point one way. Shankara reads the sutra as saying that the Upanishads, taken as a whole, agree in presenting Brahman as their subject. He cites passages such as 'Being alone was here in the beginning, one without a second' and 'this self is Brahman'. His reasoning has steps. A passage that seems to speak of something else should not be given a new meaning when the plain one fits. The texts do not teach action or worship of a deity, because they deny the split of doer, deed and result. And knowing Brahman needs no further command, because the knowing itself ends suffering. Ramanuja and Madhva accept the agreement but read Brahman as a God distinct from the self.

Picture a dozen compass needles set on a table around a hidden magnet. Each sits at a different spot, yet all swing to the same point. The needles are the many Upanishadic passages, the hidden magnet is Brahman, and their shared direction is the agreement the sutra points to.

The sutra makes a claim about how to read a body of texts: find the one purpose that makes the many passages cohere. Modern hermeneutics knows this move, the 'principle of charity' or reading parts by the whole. It is also contested. Scholars of the Upanishads often see several voices and periods in them, and not one doctrine, and the Advaita, Vishishtadvaita and Dvaita readings show that coherence can be reached in more than one way. Whether a text is true is a separate question from what it means, and textual agreement cannot settle it. The claim that scripture is a valid source of knowledge for something beyond perception is not testable by empirical science. Philosophers of mind who debate whether consciousness is fundamental have no agreed answer either.
