Why Matter Cannot See

Brahma Sutras 1.1.5

Meaning · English

Because of 'seeing', the first cause is not what lacks scriptural grounding. The cause is described as one who sees.

The question: what is the world's first cause? Samkhya answers with pradhana, also called prakriti, an unconscious stuff made of three strands called gunas. Badarayana says no, because of ikshati, 'seeing'. Ikshati is the verb for looking, thinking, deliberating. Shankara points to the Upanishads: 'In the beginning this was Being alone, one without a second. It saw: may I become many.' Another passage says the Self 'saw: let me create the worlds.' So in these texts the cause looks first, then creates. Shankara then answers Samkhya's reply that matter knows through its sattva guna. He says that while the three gunas are in balance, sattva has no knowing to offer. Knowing also needs a witness, and unconscious matter is not one. Hence, for Shankara, the cause is conscious. Ramanuja and Madhva agree the cause sees, but identify it as a personal God, Vishnu, distinct from souls and matter.

Picture a potter's wheel and clay. The clay is plentiful, yet no pot appears until someone looks at it, plans its shape and begins to work. Samkhya's matter is the clay and Vedanta's cause is the potter. The sutra says the texts describe a cause that looks and plans, so it cannot be the clay alone.

The sutra's problem is still alive: can mind come from something with no mind in it? Physicalism says yes. Consciousness arose late, from complex matter such as brains, and neuroscience ties experience closely to brain activity. Critics point to the hard problem of consciousness: nobody has shown why physical processes should feel like anything. Panpsychism and idealism take mind to be basic, which is nearer the sutra. Neither side has settled it, and physics cannot decide it by measurement. One difference matters. Modern physicalists do not call matter a designing cause that looks ahead. Purposes, for them, emerge in evolved creatures. The sutra's argument also rests on scripture, which is not evidence in modern science.
