Brahman as material cause

Brahma Sutras 1.4.23

Meaning · English

Brahman is also the material cause, and not only the maker, because this alone fits the promise made at the start and the example given for it.

The question behind the sutra: when the texts call Brahman the cause of the world, what kind of cause is meant? A cause can be the maker, like a potter who shapes a pot. It can also be the material, like the clay itself. The sutra says Brahman is both. Shankara explains the first view he is answering: the texts say Brahman 'reflected' before creating, and reflecting before acting is how a potter works, so Brahman might be only the maker. His reply rests on two things the text itself sets up. The promise (pratijna) is that by knowing the one thing, everything else becomes known. The example (drishtanta) is clay: know one lump of clay and you know everything made of clay. That promise only holds if Brahman is the material of all things. If Brahman were only the maker, knowing it would tell you nothing about pots, trees or people. Ramanuja agrees Brahman is the material cause, understood through Brahman's body, but Madhva denies this, holding Brahman only the maker, with a separate prakriti as the material cause.

Picture a sculptor carving a statue from marble. Knowing the sculptor tells you nothing about marble. Now picture a clay worker whose pots, bowls and jugs are all the same clay. Knowing the clay tells you what every piece is. The sutra says Brahman is like the clay, not only like the sculptor.

Philosophy of science still asks whether the world has a single underlying stuff. Physics describes everything through a small set of fields and particles, which echoes the idea that very different things share one base. But physics does not say that base is conscious, and that is where the sutra's claim goes far beyond it. Monism, the view that reality is one kind of thing, has serious defenders: idealists say that thing is mind, physicalists say it is matter, and neutral monists say it is neither. The sutra's argument is a reading of what a text promises, and that cannot be settled by experiment. Whether consciousness could be the base of the physical world is an open question, tied to the hard problem of consciousness, and no mainstream science decides it.
