Pot Is Only Clay
Brahma Sutras 2.1.15
Meaning · English
The effect is not other than its cause, as is known from the scriptural words 'a name, a word' and from other such statements.
The question behind the sutra is this: if the world comes from Brahman, is the world something apart from Brahman? Badarayana says no. Ananyatva means 'not otherness', so the effect has no separate existence from its cause. Shankara's commentary gives the reasoning from a Upanishad passage. Know one lump of clay and you know everything made of clay, because a pot, a dish and a cup are only forms the clay takes. The text calls the change 'a name, a word': speech starts calling it a pot, but what is really there is clay. Shankara reads the 'and other such statements' as including 'That you are' and 'all this is Brahman'. These speak of one self, and only then does knowing one thing give knowing everything. So for Advaita, the many things of the world have no being apart from Brahman. Ramanuja and Madhva read the sutra differently: for Ramanuja the world is Brahman's body and so not separate, and for Madhva the dependence is real but difference remains.
A potter's shelf holds jugs, bowls and lamps. Weigh every one and the clay is the same clay. Crush them and nothing is lost but the shapes. The shapes are what we point at and name, while the clay is what each one is. The world's many things are the shapes; Brahman, for Shankara, is the clay.
Modern thought has a close relative in reductionism: tables, cells and storms are patterns of one underlying stuff, and the names mark useful groupings. Physics supports this much, since all ordinary objects are arrangements of a few kinds of particles and fields. The sutra goes further than physics can, though. It says the underlying reality is conscious, one Brahman, and that the difference between things is not fully real. Physics neither shows nor refutes that. Idealists and panpsychists argue for something nearby, while physicalists hold the base is non-conscious matter. Whether names merely carve up reality or track real divisions in it is still debated in philosophy. Science describes the structure of the clay well. It has no test for whether that clay is consciousness.
