Making Without Tools
Brahma Sutras 2.1.24

If it is objected that Brahman cannot be the cause, since makers are seen to gather their materials and tools first, the answer is no: it is like milk, which becomes curd by itself.
The question: potters and weavers collect clay, wheel, thread or water before they make anything. Brahman, the one conscious reality, is said to be the cause of the world with no second thing beside it. How can it make anything with no tools? The sutra states this objection, upasamhara-darshana, 'the seeing of gathered equipment', and rejects it with one comparison: milk. Shankara's reading is that milk turns into curd on its own nature, with no outside maker shaping it. He anticipates a reply: milk needs warmth and a starter. He answers that these only prompt a change milk is already able to make. Warmth cannot turn air or space into curd. So the capacity belongs to the substance. Brahman, whose power is complete in itself, needs no helper to make up a lack. Shankara cites a scripture that says its power is of many kinds and is its own nature. Ramanuja and Madhva read the sutra with Brahman as a real cause too, but not in Shankara's sense of appearance.
Picture a seed in damp soil. No sculptor stands over it with a chisel, yet root, stem and leaf unfold from what the seed already is. Water and warmth help, but the form comes from within. Brahman, on this reading, stands to the world as the seed's own nature stands to the plant.
The objection assumes every maker works like a craftsman, with outside tools. Today's physics and biology give many cases of structure arising without a designer's hands: crystals form, embryos develop, and galaxies condense from the laws and properties of matter. This agrees with the thought that a thing's own nature can produce complexity. The analogy has limits. Milk does need heat and bacteria, as the commentary itself concedes, and microbiology explains curdling as the work of those bacteria acting on milk sugar and protein. Whether a conscious, single reality could be the source of the world is not something physics or biology can test. It is a metaphysical question, debated between idealists, monists and physicalists, and it stays open.
