Bhakti Defined as Love
Narada Bhakti Sutras 1
Meaning · English
Now, therefore, we shall explain bhakti, loving devotion. Bhakti has the very form of supreme love, the highest love there is, and that love is directed to God. Narada begins his teaching here, naming at the outset what he means by the word.
Two words carry the sutra. Bhakti is loving devotion, from the root bhaj, to share in. It points to taking part in something, not standing off from it. Prema is love, and parama makes it supreme. The sutra says bhakti has this love as its very form, so it is not a means to some other thing. The love is turned toward God, named simply as 'this'. Now the clauses. 'Now' marks the opening of a fresh subject. 'Therefore' tells us the explanation arises from a need: a listener has come asking what devotion is, and Narada answers. 'We shall explain' promises a careful, ordered teaching, not a single remark. Then comes the definition, and it is short. Devotion is not defined as ritual, as knowledge, or as a list of practices. It is defined as love of the highest kind, aimed at God. This is why the definition comes first. Every later sutra on devotion's marks, its nectar and its examples depends on knowing what is being described. The sutra asks its listener to hold one plain idea while hearing the rest: whatever is called bhakti must be love, and love for God.
A trailhead signboard names the summit before the path begins. Walkers read one word, then climb with it in mind. The sutra does the same: it names the destination first, supreme love for God, so every later step of the teaching can be read as part of that climb.
1. This evening, sit for five minutes somewhere quiet, with no phone. 2. Recall one time you gave something freely, from love and not from duty. Stay with it for a minute. 3. Notice where in the body that memory is felt: chest, throat, face. 4. Say one sentence to God in your own words, as you would to someone dear. 5. Notice whether it felt like love or like habit. Only notice.
A man has lit the lamp at the family shrine every dawn for twenty years. This morning he stands there, matches in hand, and feels nothing. The act is correct, and the warmth is missing. He wonders whether something is wrong with him. The sutra gives him a different question. It defines bhakti as love, not as correct action, so he can ask what he actually loves and let the lamp be lit from there. He might begin with gratitude for the quiet hour, for the people asleep in the house, for the life that gave him a morning. He turns that warmth toward God, who in this teaching is the object of the love. Then the same small act has a different centre. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a duty done without care feels hollow, and the same duty done with care does not. The sutra does not promise that feeling will arrive on a given morning, and it does not say what to do about low mood or grief that needs a doctor's attention. It names what the practice is for.
