Nectar That Completes

Narada Bhakti Sutras 3

Meaning · English

And bhakti is of the nature of nectar. Having gained it, a person becomes perfected, becomes immortal, becomes contented.

Three plain words carry this sutra. Amrita is nectar, literally what is not-death, the drink that deathless beings take. Siddha is one who is perfected, whose work is done. Tripta is contented, filled the way a hungry person is filled after a meal. Narada says bhakti has the nature of amrita. Then he names what a person becomes on gaining it: perfected, deathless, content. Each word answers a lack. Perfected answers the feeling of being unfinished. Deathless answers fear of ending. Content answers the endless wanting that never says enough. The sutra comes right after Narada has called bhakti supreme love for God. A reader might take love for a mood that comes and goes, or a duty carried out with effort. Narada says it is more like food that actually feeds. It is taught here to show why anyone would seek it: because it ends the searching that every other gain leaves going. It asks the listener to see bhakti as something that satisfies, and so to look for it as one looks for water when thirsty, not as an obligation to be ticked off.

A child who has been tugging at a mother's sleeve all afternoon asking for sweets, toys and games is finally lifted into her lap and falls quiet. Nothing was handed over, yet the asking stops. Bhakti, in Narada's telling, is that lap: the one thing that ends the tugging.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes and list three things you wanted this week and got. 2. Beside each, write how long the satisfaction lasted: an hour, a day, until the next want. 3. Then recall one moment of simple love, a person or a prayer, when you wanted nothing. Note how it felt in the body. 4. Tomorrow, give ten minutes to whatever you love most, with no request attached.

A man stands in a shop doorway at closing time, phone in hand, comparing the price of a watch he does not need. He bought a phone last month that pleased him for two days. Narada's sutra speaks to this moment. It says bhakti is the one gain that leaves a person content, where other gains only raise the next want. Ordinary experience bears out half of this: new purchases do fade fast, while time with people we love or acts of care often leave a quiet fullness. The man could ask, before buying, what he is really hungry for, and spend the evening with his brother instead. The sutra does not promise that wanting will vanish, that worry or grief will leave, or that one evening changes a habit. Its words perfected and deathless are the text's own teaching about what bhakti gives, and they are not claims about the body. Low mood or anxiety that will not lift still deserves a doctor's attention.
