Meaning · English

Having found that love, a person wants nothing else, grieves over nothing, hates no one, takes no delight, and has no eagerness. Knowing it, such a person becomes as if intoxicated, becomes still, and rests content in the Self.

Narada has called this love supreme and compared it to nectar. Now he says what it looks like in a person who has it. He lists what drops away: wanting, grief, hatred, delight in passing things, and the itch to start new projects. Four words carry the teaching. Utsahi is the eager, striving person always busy with the next thing; that eagerness is no longer there. Ramate means to take pleasure in things; the pleasure that chases objects is no longer the pull. Matta means intoxicated, drunk. Narada says the one who knows this love is like someone drunk on it, absorbed past ordinary concerns. Stabdha means stilled, almost stunned into silence. Atmarama joins atman, the Self, with rama, to rest or play. Such a person finds their rest in the Self and no longer needs the world to supply it. The reason for teaching it here is a natural question: if love for God is the highest thing, what happens to a person's other wants? Narada answers that they lose their grip. They are not forced out. They fade because the person is already full. The sutra asks the listener to measure devotion by this fullness, and not by effort or display.

A child at a fair tugs at every stall, wanting this toy and that sweet. Then she is handed the one thing she really came for and stops tugging. She stands still, hands full, no longer looking at the other stalls. The wants quiet because the heart is already filled.

1. Tonight, pick one ordinary thing you love: a person, a song, a cup of tea. Give it ten unhurried minutes with your phone out of reach. 2. While you are with it, notice each time the mind reaches for something else: a want, a worry, a grudge, a plan. 3. Do not scold the reach. Just note that it happened, and come back. 4. Afterward, write one line on what felt quieter, even slightly.

A grandmother sits up in the small hours holding her newborn grandson, who has finally fallen asleep. She notices she has not picked up her phone. The old quarrel with her sister, the list for tomorrow and the small wish for a better chair have all gone quiet. Narada's sutra describes this on a far larger scale: when something fills the heart completely, the usual pulls of wanting, resentment and restlessness loosen, because nothing is left over for them to feed on. Ordinary experience bears out the small version, since deep absorption in something loved does quiet the mind's reaching. The sutra goes further. It speaks of a love for God that makes a person still, and it gives that as the text's own teaching, not something this one scene proves. It does not promise that grief will not come, that illness will pass, or that she will never want anything again. Her tiredness, her worries and her need for a doctor if she is unwell remain real. The sutra describes what fullness is like, and does not say how to get through any particular night.
