Narada Bhakti Sutras 7

Meaning · English

Love of God is not wanting things for oneself, because its nature is stopping. And this stopping means laying down, at His feet, all one's activity in the worldly round and in the ritual round prescribed by the scriptures.

Three words carry this. Kama is desire, the wish to get something for oneself. Nirodha is stopping, a holding back, a bringing to rest. Nyasa is laying down, the way you set a heavy bag on the ground. Vyapara is activity, all the busy doing of a life. Loka is the everyday world; veda is the scriptural, ritual side of life. The first line says bhakti does not desire. Its nature is nirodha. The second line says what that stopping is. It is not sitting still and it is not killing feeling. It is laying down both kinds of activity, worldly and ritual, and placing them with God. This answers a question the earlier sutras raise. Narada has called bhakti supreme love, and said that in it wants fall away. A listener might think love must then be a kind of craving. Narada says no. Love that asks for a return is trade. Here the doer stops working for his own gain and offers each act upward. Sutra 11 shows the same life still lived in the world, acting in harmony with God. It asks one thing of the listener: to look at what he does all day, and notice whose profit it is for.

A porter climbs a long stair with a trunk on his back, sure that it is his own. At the top he sets it down at its owner's door. His legs still work. Only the claiming is gone. Bhakti is that setting down: the work goes on, the grip on its reward is released.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as cooking a meal or answering a message. 2. Before you start, say quietly, "This is offered to God." 3. While you do it, notice each time you reach for praise, thanks or a result. 4. When you finish, pause for ten seconds and let the result go, however it turned out.

A shopkeeper opens his shutters on the morning the rent is due. His chest is tight. He counts the till before a single customer has come, and every sale feels like a verdict on him. The verse offers him a different order. First he does the work in front of him: sweeps, arranges the shelves, greets the first person who walks in. Each act is done for its own sake and handed over, not held as a bet on the rent. The counting stops being constant. His hands are steadier because they are not carrying the whole outcome at once. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind fixed on the result does its task worse. The text teaches this as surrender of activity to God, which is more than a calming habit. The limit is plain. Laying down the claim on results does not pay the rent, and it does not take away worry on a hard day. He still has to speak to his landlord, and to a friend or advisor if the money is truly short.
