Single-Hearted Devotion

Narada Bhakti Sutras 9

Meaning · English

Single-heartedness toward Him, and an even, unmoved distance from whatever stands against Him. Giving up every other refuge: that is single-heartedness.

Three words carry the teaching. Ananyata means not-otherness: the heart has no second place to turn. Udasinata, indifference, comes from sitting apart. It is not hatred or fear. It is a calm distance, neither fighting what opposes God nor following it. Ashraya means refuge, something you lean on, and tyaga means giving up. The first half names two marks of devotion. The heart rests in God alone, and what works against that love is met with quiet distance rather than a quarrel. The second half defines the first: single-heartedness is giving up other refuges. Narada does not mean the world is forbidden. He means the weight of the heart is no longer handed to wealth, standing, people or cleverness as if they could finally hold it. Earlier sutras describe the person who has found this love as wanting nothing and as love that is a kind of restraint. This sutra says what that looks like in practice. It answers the question of what such love does with a person's other dependences. It asks the listener to notice, honestly, where the heart actually leans when trouble comes.

A man crossing a river on stepping stones tests each one and keeps one foot back on the last, never putting his full weight forward. Single-heartedness is standing on one stone with the whole body, instead of hovering between several and trusting none.

1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit with a pen and paper and write the things you reach for first when worried: a person, a phone, money, a plan. 2. Next to each, write one word: does it steady you or only distract you? 3. Tomorrow, when worry arrives, pause for one slow breath before reaching for the usual thing, and turn first to God in whatever words you have. 4. Notice what the pause felt like, and leave the rest alone.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while her father is in surgery. Her hand is already on her phone, scrolling news, messaging three relatives, checking her bank balance, each one a small refuge she grabs in turn. The sutra, as Narada teaches it, would change this in steps. First she notices how many things she is leaning on at once. Then she sees that none of them can carry the weight, and that her restlessness comes partly from asking each of them to. Then she puts the phone face down, lets the people near her be company rather than rescue, and turns her attention to God alone for a few minutes. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind split among many supports grows more anxious, and that one steady thing rests it. The sutra does not promise her father will live, remove her fear, or replace the surgeon, the family or the doctors she rightly depends on. It speaks only of where the heart finally rests.
