Rules Weighed by Their Aim
Narada Bhakti Sutras 11
Meaning · English
Among the rules of the world and of scripture, follow what favors God. Toward whatever opposes God, keep an even, unmoved indifference.
Three words carry the sutra. Loka means the world: its customs, work, family duties, manners. Veda means scripture: the sacred rules and observances. Anukula means favorable, running in the same direction as something. Udasinata means sitting apart, a calm indifference, neither fighting a thing nor joining it. So the sutra says two things. Narada does not ask the lover of God to throw out worldly duty or religious rule. He asks that each be kept when it leans toward God: the habit that helps remembrance, the custom that keeps the heart turned that way. And when something works against God, the answer is not hatred or argument. It is a steady, unbothered distance. This is taught here because sutra 7 has just spoken of giving up worldly and scriptural activity, and a reader could take that as a call to drop every rule. This sutra answers that worry. Rules are kept or set aside by one test: which way do they lean? The same word for indifference appears in sutra 9, where it is joined to single-heartedness. The sutra asks the listener to sort what fills the day by that one question, keeping what helps and quietly letting go of what pulls away.
A compass needle sits in a pocket full of keys, coins and pens. It does not fight them or ignore them. Everything else in the pocket is simply there, while the needle keeps swinging back to north. The rules of life are the pocket's contents; God is north, and each rule is judged by whether it leans that way.
1. Tonight, write down five things you do on an ordinary day: a duty, a habit, a custom, a pastime, a conversation. 2. Beside each, write one word: helps, neutral, or pulls away from remembering God. 3. Pick one that helps and keep it tomorrow without change. 4. Pick one that pulls away. When it comes up, do not argue with it or scold yourself. Just let it pass, and notice how it feels to stay calm.
A man stands at a wedding hall, plate in hand, when a relative starts the old argument about money and who owes whom. He wants to answer back. He also wants to be a good guest and still say his evening prayer later. The sutra gives him a way to sort it. The courtesy of greeting, eating and staying until the blessing helps him keep his heart gentle, so he keeps it. The quarrel works against the quiet he is trying to keep, so he does not take it up. He neither lectures the relative nor leaves in a huff. He nods, asks about the children, and moves toward the food. Step by step: he notices the pull, asks which way it leans, keeps the custom, and lets the bait go by. Ordinary experience agrees that an argument we refuse to feed often dies sooner. The sutra does not promise that the relative will stop, that the old hurt will not sting, or that indifference will come easily the first time.
