Meaning · English

Narada says that scripture should be guarded until faith has become firm. Without that guarding, there is the fear of falling. Then he turns to the daily business of the world, such as eating and the like. That business goes on only as long as the body is kept alive, and it ends when the body's holding ends.

Two ideas sit side by side here, and both are about what is still needed on the road. The first is guarding scripture. The word shastra means the teaching handed down, and the word for guarding it means keeping it close and protecting it. The word niscaya names the settled conviction Narada is waiting for, the point where faith stops wobbling. Until then, he says, keep the teaching guarded. Without that care there is fear of falling, of slipping away from the path before the roots have taken hold. The second idea is about worldly activity. Narada names eating as the plain example. The word bhojana means taking food, and he adds the phrase 'and the like' to cover the body's ordinary upkeep. This activity is not condemned. It is given a limit: it continues as long as the body is held together, and no longer. Why teach both now? The sutras just before this one ask for an undivided love that turns away from other supports. A listener naturally asks what becomes of the study, the meals and the daily work. Narada answers in two parts. The teaching still needs protecting while faith is young. The body's needs are real, but they have a natural end and need not become a second master. What this asks of the listener is modest: to treat early faith as something delicate, and to treat eating and daily work as ordinary tasks that belong to the body's span.

A young sapling in a garden has a stake beside it and a wire guard around it. The guard keeps goats and wind away while the trunk is thin, and nobody objects when it comes off years later. Early faith is the sapling, and guarding the teaching is the wire.

1. Choose one teaching or line you care about. Read it slowly this morning for five minutes, before any argument or commentary. 2. If someone casts doubt on it today, notice the pull to defend it. You can simply say nothing and keep the line safe. 3. At your next meal, eat without hurry or guilt. Note that the body asks for food and that this is ordinary.

A young woman has started reading a few lines each morning. At a family dinner an uncle laughs and asks what she thinks she is doing. She feels the urge to prove herself with a long argument. Narada's counsel changes the moment in steps. First, she can see that a habit only weeks old is fragile, and guarding it does not mean winning the table. She can answer briefly, or not at all, and keep her morning reading as it was. Then she eats the meal she is hungry for, without treating it as a distraction from her path, because the sutra counts eating as the body's plain business for as long as it lasts. Ordinary experience agrees that new habits are easily knocked over by teasing. The limit is that this offers no guarantee that doubt will not return, and it does not settle the argument with her uncle. It only gives her a way to protect what is still young.
