Meaning · English

These are the marks of devotion, and they are told now, for the views about them differ. Parashara's son, Vyasa, holds that devotion is a deep love for worship and the acts that go with it: the offering of flowers, the rites, the daily service of God.

The sutra opens by saying that the marks of devotion are now to be told, and that people differ about them. Narada does not give one answer. He lays out several, and this is the first: the view of Vyasa, the son of Parashara. Two words carry it. Anuraga is attachment of the warm kind: raga is colour or fondness, and anu means following along, so it is love that stays close to its object. Puja is worship, the honouring of God with flowers, water, lamps, song. The "and so on" in the sutra takes in the other acts of service. So on this view, devotion is not just belief and not just the act. It is love living inside the act. A person can offer flowers coldly, as a chore. Vyasa's mark is that the heart is fond of the offering itself, and wants to be there. Why is this taught here? The earlier sutras said bhakti is supreme love. A reader then asks what that love looks like in a life. Narada answers by listing how wise teachers have seen it, starting with the most visible form, worship. The sutras that follow give other views, so this one is a first mark and not the whole. For the listener it asks one thing: look at the worship you already do, and ask whether any fondness is in it.

Think of a grandmother making tea for a grandchild who is coming. The cup, the sugar, the waiting are all small tasks, yet she does each gladly, and the gladness is the point. Worship is the tea-making here, and devotion on this view is the fondness in her hands.

1. Choose one small act of worship you already do: lighting a lamp, a prayer, a bow, a few minutes of song. 2. Do it today slowly, taking about five minutes, and do nothing else during it. 3. Notice, once, whether you are doing it from habit or from fondness. Do not fix it. Just notice. 4. Tonight, recall one moment of that act that felt warm, and note it in a line.

A mother is folding her son's school clothes the night before his first day away at boarding school. It is a plain chore, and she does it slowly, smoothing each collar. Nobody would call it a ritual, yet it carries all her love. The sutra speaks to exactly this. Narada gives Vyasa's view that devotion shows in the care taken with the acts of worship, not apart from them. Step by step: the same task done hurriedly is a task, and done with fondness it becomes an expression of the heart. The act stays the same. What changes is the attention and warmth inside it. Ordinary experience agrees that a rushed gesture and an attentive one feel different to the person doing them, and to the person receiving them. Nothing here needs a test to be believed. The limit is plain. Fondness in an act cannot be forced by wishing, and the sutra does not promise that every sitting will feel warm. It does not ease the mother's worry about her son, or replace anything else a day asks of her. It says only where one old teacher looked for love.
