Narada Bhakti Sutras 17

Meaning · English

Garga says that bhakti is love for the sacred stories of God and the things that go with them. Shandilya says that bhakti is delight in the Self, so long as that delight is not set against devotion to God.

After the sutras promise to name the marks of bhakti, Narada lists what different teachers have said. This sutra gives two of those views. He reports them as theirs, not yet as his own. Garga's answer rests on katha, which means a telling, a story. For him bhakti shows itself as love of hearing and speaking about God: the sacred stories and the practices gathered around them. The word for 'and the rest' leaves the list open. Love grows where a person likes to listen and to talk. Shandilya's answer rests on rati and atman. Rati is delight, the contentment of the heart resting in something, from a root meaning to rest and enjoy. Atman is the Self, the inmost one. For Shandilya, bhakti is that resting delight in the Self. He adds a condition: avirodha, no opposition. This delight must not be set against devotion to God. It is not a retreat into private satisfaction. The two views are placed side by side to answer the question of what bhakti looks like from outside and inside. Garga describes what the lover does, which is to listen and speak. Shandilya describes where the lover rests. The sutra asks the listener to see that love can be recognised by its appetite for stories and by a quiet contentment, and that neither contradicts the other.

One lamp stands in a small room. One person reads by its light and keeps turning pages. Another sits near it, warm and still, asking nothing more. The reading is the love that gathers around the stories. The stillness is the delight that rests in the Self. The lamp is the same.

1. Choose one sacred story you already know, a few lines or a page, and read it aloud today at a set time, such as after dinner. Take about five minutes. 2. Notice which line your attention stays on, and say it again slowly. 3. Sit quietly for two minutes with your hands still. Notice whether anything in you feels settled, and let it stay. 4. Tell one person the story in your own words this week.

A taxi driver sits in a jam at dusk, jaw tight, rehearsing an argument with his landlord. The radio is on, and a storyteller is halfway through a tale he has known since childhood. Without choosing it, he starts listening. The argument loses its place in his head. His grip on the wheel eases. When the story ends, he lets out a long breath and finds he is simply sitting there, not unhappy. The verse describes both movements. Garga's is the pull toward a story, which gives a restless mind somewhere to go. Shandilya's is the rest that follows, a plain contentment in being oneself. Ordinary experience bears this out, since a frightened child often settles when a familiar story is told. The text offers these two as marks of bhakti, and the quiet is said to sit alongside devotion, not against it. The jam does not clear, and the rent is still due. The verse does not promise that sorrow, illness or debt will lift. If the tightness in his chest does not pass, a doctor is the right person to ask.
