But Narada says: devotion is this. All one's conduct, every action and observance, is offered to Him. And when He is forgotten, there is the deepest restlessness and anguish. So it is; it is indeed so. It was this way with the gopis of Vraja.
Earlier sutras gave other sages' views on what devotion is. Here Narada gives his own, and the small word that opens the sutra marks the turn: but for Narada. Three words carry it. Acara is conduct, the whole round of what a person does, not only worship. Arpita is offered, laid down before someone. So the first mark of devotion is that ordinary doing, eating, working, speaking, keeping vows, is handed over to God instead of kept for oneself. Vyakulata is agitation, the state of being badly shaken. It is the second mark: when God slips from the mind, the devotee is pained, as someone is who has lost something dear. The two marks go together. Offering shows that love has reached the hands and the day. Anguish at forgetting shows it has reached the heart. Offering alone could be habit. Anguish alone could be only mood. The repeated words, it is so, it is indeed so, are Narada pressing his point. He gives no argument. He states it as something certain. Then he names the example: the gopis of Vraja. Narada points to them as people whose whole life was turned toward Krishna and who could not bear to lose him from their thought. The sutra answers the question of how anyone can tell love from mere belief. Narada's answer is what a person does with their days, and how it feels when the thought of God goes missing.
A kite flier stands in a field. Every dip and climb of the kite answers a tug from the hand on the string, and if the string goes slack, his stomach drops. The kite's movements are the offered actions. The sudden drop in the flier's chest is the anguish at forgetting.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, walking to the shop, or answering a message. 2. Before starting, say silently, "This is for You." Then do it as you normally would. 3. Later, notice one moment when you realise you forgot all about it. Stay with that moment for a few breaths and see what it feels like. 4. Repeat tomorrow with a different task.
A taxi driver sits in his car before dawn, engine off, the first fare still an hour away. For three weeks he has rushed from one trip to the next, and he sees that he has not once thought of the small picture taped to his dashboard. A pang comes. He touches the frame and begins the day with that one thought. The verse would work in that moment in steps. First, the pang is noticed as a pang, not argued away. Second, the day's work, the driving, the counting of change, the patience with a rude passenger, is handed over in a single sentence at the start. Third, the memory is allowed to return in small gaps between fares. Narada teaches that this ache is itself a mark of love and not a failure to be ashamed of. Ordinary experience agrees that when attention is crowded, the things we love most are the first to slip, and that a small repeated cue helps bring them back. The verse does not promise that the ache will vanish, or that the days will grow easier. It does not replace rest, medical care, or help when the load is too heavy.
