Even in the gopis, there is no forgetting of His greatness, and no fault to be found in that. Without that knowledge, their love would be like the love of lovers who meet in secret. In that kind of love there is no happiness in the other's happiness at all.

Three short clauses, each answering a doubt the gopis could raise. The gopis of Vraja loved Krishna with great intensity, so a reader may think their love was only wild attachment, with no sense of who He is. Narada says no. Three words carry it. Mahatmya means greatness, the sense of how vast and worthy He is. Jnana is knowing, here a steady awareness and not book learning. Jara means a secret lover, one who takes pleasure from another person for his own sake. The first clause says that even among the gopis, the knowledge of His greatness was never forgotten, and nobody can fairly accuse them of forgetting it. The second says that without this knowledge their love would have been like that of secret lovers: hungry, and aimed at one's own enjoyment. The third names the test. In such love there is no joy in the beloved's joy. The lover wants something from the other and does not rejoice in the other's good. This is taught here because sutra 19 just held up the gopis as the example of devotion, and a listener might take their passion for plain longing. Narada separates the two. Real love knows who it loves and is glad for the beloved's happiness. It asks the listener to look at their own devotion and see whether it is wanting or rejoicing.

Picture two people at a wedding. One stands in the crowd, glad to see the bride and groom happy, wanting nothing from them. The other keeps looking for what the couple might give him. Both are close to the couple. Only the first is rejoicing in their joy, which is the gopis' love as Narada describes it.

1. Choose one person you love and set aside ten minutes today. 2. Ask yourself quietly: what do I want from them? Then ask: what do I wish for them? 3. Do one small thing for them that asks for nothing back, such as a message of thanks or a cup of tea made unasked. 4. That evening, notice whether their happiness pleased you in itself.

A man is sitting at his daughter's school recital, waiting for her turn. He is tired, and part of him is checking whether she will make him look good in front of the other parents. Then she walks out, nervous, and finds his face in the crowd. The verse speaks to that moment. Narada's teaching is that love which knows the worth of the beloved takes joy in the beloved's joy. The man could notice the first thought, the one about himself, and let it pass. He could watch her instead, and be glad that she is standing there at all. Ordinary experience confirms that love tangled up with our own needs feels thin, while gladness at another's good feels full. The teaching does not promise the nervousness will vanish, or that mixed motives will stop appearing. It does not settle whether the performance goes well. It names one thing worth watching in oneself: whether the other's happiness has become your own.
