Where is instruction, where is scripture, where is the student, where is the teacher? Where is any human aim for me, free of every added limit, the auspicious one? Where is existence, where is non-existence? Where is one, where is two? What more is there to say here? Nothing at all arises in me.
Janaka lists the whole apparatus of learning and asks where each part is. Upadesha is instruction, from a root meaning to point toward. Shastra is scripture. Shishya and guru are pupil and teacher. Purushartha is the human aim, what a person lives to gain. Janaka says none of these can be found in him, because he is nirupadhi. An upadhi is a thing laid on top, a label or limit added to the self, like a title pinned to a coat. Without any such addition, he calls himself shiva, the auspicious, the self that was never in need. Then he turns to the pairs the mind uses to hold anything: is, is not; one, two. He asks where those stand as well. Ashtavakra's teaching ran from ignorance to recognition, and Janaka now says that, seen from the recognised self, the road, the guide and the traveller are not separate things. He gives the reason in the last line: nothing arises in him. No new thought, wish or gap appears for any of these to answer. So there is nothing left to teach and no one left to teach it to. This is Janaka's report of his own state, not a rule for the reader.
You dream you are sitting an exam. There is an invigilator, a question paper, a pass mark and a fear of failing. You wake, and all of them go at once, because none had a place apart from the dream. Teacher, text, pupil and aim go the same way for Janaka.
1. Tonight, before sleep, take two minutes and name one role you played today: teacher, student, helper, the one who is behind. 2. Say to yourself what you actually are underneath it: the one who was aware of that role being played. 3. Notice, for a few breaths, that the awareness itself was not hurried, graded or lacking anything. 4. Put the role down for the night, as you would a coat, and leave it there.
A schoolteacher is in her classroom on her last afternoon before retirement. The desks are empty, the board is wiped, and her keys lie on the table. For thirty years she has been the one who knows, and now no one is waiting for her to speak. She feels the loss of the role before she feels anything else. Janaka's words go straight to that moment. He says the pupil, the lesson and the teacher were each something laid on, and what stands in the quiet room was never any of them. So she can see that the role has ended without taking it as the end of herself. She can notice that the one who watched thirty years of mornings is still here, steady and not hurt. The tradition gives this as Janaka's own report of an awakened state. It does not promise that her grief will lift, that the empty room will not ache, or that she needs no friends, rest or a doctor when her body asks. Ordinary experience does show that people who hold only one role often feel lost when it goes.
