Salutation to the Inner Sound

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 4.1

Meaning · English

Bowing to Shiva, the guru, whose own nature is nada, bindu and kala. The one who stays always devoted to him goes to the state without stain.

The fourth chapter opens with a bow, and the words carry the teaching. Namah is a bending of the self, a lowering. Shiva is named first, and the commentary reads the word two ways: as the one whose nature is happiness, or as the Lord himself. Guru means teacher. The commentary offers two readings. It may be the human teacher, or Shiva as the inner ruler of all beings who teaches everyone, and it quotes Patanjali's line that he taught even the earliest teachers because time does not limit him. Then comes the strange phrase: his self is nada, bindu and kala. Nada is sound that rings on, like a struck bronze bell. The commentary says bindu is the sound that follows the nasal stop, and kala is a part of nada. So the teacher is being named as sound in its stages. The second line gives the promise. One who is always devoted to this goes to niranjana pada, the stainless state. Anjana is a smear or stain, and the commentary takes it as the covering of maya. Pada is a place reached or a footing. The commentary adds a second reason for the opening: good work meets many obstacles, so Svatmarama begins with a bow to remove them. The text asks one thing of the practitioner here, which is constancy. The word is always, and the devotion is aimed at the sound. Whether the stainless state exists is the text's claim and cannot be checked from outside.

A man lies awake in a quiet house after midnight and notices a faint ringing in his own ears. Today's doctors know that hearing is never wholly silent. The ear and brain make their own faint noise, and it becomes noticeable when everything else stops. That is an ordinary fact of hearing. It does not confirm the nada the Pradipika describes, and the two should not be equated. What is well established is smaller. Keeping the attention on one steady thing, such as a sound, tends to quiet restless thinking, and many people find that settling. The text's larger claims have no modern counterpart. There is no test for a stainless state, and nothing in physiology matches Shiva as sound, or bindu and kala. Those belong to the tradition's account and are taken here as its own words. A practice of long, absorbed listening is also not harmless for everyone. People who already find silence distressing, or who are troubled by ringing in the ears, do well to speak with a doctor and a teacher first.
