Three Rare Things, One Grace
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 4.9
Meaning · English
Hard to find is giving up the objects of the senses. Hard to find is the sight of the real. Hard to find is the natural state. None of these comes without the kindness of a true teacher.
The verse is a short list with one refrain. Three things are called durlabha, hard to get: viṣaya-tyāga, tattva-darśana and the sahaja state. Then it names the one condition that makes all three reachable, the karuṇā, the compassion or grace, of a sadguru, a true teacher. Take them one at a time. Viṣaya means the objects that bind the mind by clinging to it. The commentary reads these as the things of this world, such as a wife and household, and the things promised in the next, such as heavenly pleasures. Tyāga here is not just walking away from them. The commentary reads it as the end of the wish to enjoy them, and that is why it is called rare. Tattva-darśana is seeing what is real. The commentary reads it as direct, first-hand knowing of the self, not knowledge by report. Sahaja means born with you, natural, effortless. The sahaja state is the one the text keeps returning to at the end of the path. The commentary equates it with the fourth state, beyond waking, dream and deep sleep. The teacher is described by the commentary as one whose gaze is steady and who sees without anything to be seen. The word vinā, without, is carried across all three lines: without his grace, none of them. The commentary's own conclusion is that with the guru's grace everything becomes easy. So the Pradipika is saying that the goal cannot be reached by technique alone. It asks of the practitioner an honest sense of how rare these things are, and a teacher.
A man in his seventies sits on a bench after a long career, finally free of work and still finding that his habits of wanting have not retired with him. He may have noticed what the verse notices: dropping a desire is slower than dropping the object. Today's psychology agrees with part of this. Habits of craving and attachment are well recognised as hard to change by willpower alone. Support, whether from a skilled therapist, a mentor or a community, is widely understood to help people make lasting changes in behaviour. The idea that a good teacher or guide matters is easy to credit. The verse's larger claims are another matter. Modern knowledge has no way to test whether a person can reach direct sight of the real, or a natural fourth state beyond waking, dream and sleep. Those are the tradition's account of inner experience, and they are not established findings. The claim that such things come only through a teacher's grace also lies outside what can be checked. What can be said is that careful guidance is valued in learning almost any demanding discipline, and that a teacher can correct what a page cannot.
