A Ladder of Lords

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 4.29

Meaning · English

Mind is the lord of the senses. Breath is the lord of the mind. Dissolving is the lord of the breath. And that dissolving rests upon the inner sound.

The verse is a chain, each link ruling the one before it. The senses (indriya) are the ears, eyes and the rest, the organs that carry the world in. The Pradipika says the mind (manas) is their lord, nathah: the one who sends them out and calls them back. The mind in turn has a lord, which is marut, the wind, meaning prana, the breath and the life-force behind it as the tradition describes it. The text is saying that the mind follows the breath. Then comes a third step: the breath has a lord too, and that is laya. Laya means melting, dissolving, a thing settling until it is no longer separate. The commentary reads this as the mind dissolving, and so the breath coming to rest with it. Last, the verse says this dissolving takes its support from nada, the inner sound, the sound heard within when attention turns inward. So the sound is where the whole ladder ends: senses under mind, mind under breath, breath under dissolving, dissolving held up by listening. The Pradipika teaches it this way because it has just spent chapter four on nada as the practice that quiets the mind. It gives the order of command so a practitioner knows where to begin and where to arrive. It claims this is how the path ends, and that is the text's claim. What it asks is that attention be placed on the inner sound, since the sound is what the dissolving leans on.

A man sits in a hospital corridor waiting for news, and his breathing has gone short and high without his noticing. When someone asks him to breathe out slowly, his thoughts slow a little as well. That small link is well established: breath and the state of the nervous system affect each other, and slow, easy breathing is widely used to settle a racing mind. It fits the verse's middle step, mind following breath, at least as an everyday observation. The ordering of senses under mind is also familiar, since attention decides what we take in from the senses. Beyond that, the evidence thins. Laya, a dissolving of mind and breath into inner sound, has no measured counterpart that a family doctor would name. Hearing a sound inside the head in silence is common and has ordinary explanations, such as the ear and brain generating their own activity. Whether it can be a doorway to the end of the path is the tradition's claim, not something that can be checked. Prana as a ruling wind is likewise the tradition's account, not physiology.
