But that devotion is higher still than action, higher than knowledge, higher than yoga. It is higher because its very form is the fruit. And it is higher because even God dislikes pride and is fond of humility.

Narada names three well-known roads: karma, which is right action and duty; jnana, which is knowledge of the truth; and yoga, which is disciplined practice of the mind. He says bhakti, loving devotion (from bhaj, to share in), stands above all three. He gives two reasons. The first is phala-rupa, 'of the form of fruit'. Action, knowledge and yoga are each practised for something that comes afterward. In Narada's teaching, bhakti is different, because the loving is itself what the others were reaching for. Nothing has to be waited for. Sutras 28 and 31, which come after this one, return to the point. The second reason concerns God. Abhimana is pride, from abhi-man, to think of oneself as someone: the doer, the knower, the accomplished one. Narada says God dislikes it. Dainya is lowliness, the plain sense of having nothing to show and nothing to claim, and God is fond of it. A person can finish a great deed, master a text or hold a hard posture, and still carry a quiet pride in it. The three roads are open to that danger. Devotion leans the other way, because the one who loves is busy with the beloved and not with a record of achievements. This answers the question the earlier sutras leave open: if devotion is so fully taught, why not simply add it to the other paths? Narada's reply is that it does not sit beside them as an equal. He sets it above them, and he grounds that in what it is and in what God loves.

Think of a long feast. Chopping, grinding and stirring all lead toward the meal, and everyone is glad when the plates are set down. The cooking is only the way to the food. In Narada's teaching, devotion is the food itself, already on the plate while the others are still at the stove.

1. Choose one task you do today out of duty, such as washing dishes, a phone call to a relative, or a walk to the shop. 2. Before starting, silently dedicate it to God, in one sentence of your own words. 3. While doing it, notice any small thought of credit, such as 'look what I am doing'. Let it pass without scolding yourself. 4. At night, spend one minute thinking of someone or something you love without asking it for anything.

A man has spent three weeks at his father's hospital bed. He has kept the medicine chart, argued with the billing desk and slept in a plastic chair. By the fourth evening he is ticking tasks off a list and feels nothing, and he is a little proud of how well he is coping. Narada's sutra points at that gap. The chart and the phone calls are the action, and they matter. But Narada teaches that devotion is the fruit itself and not a payment collected later, and that God is fond of lowliness and not of the tally. So the man puts the list down for ten minutes, sits, holds his father's hand and says nothing about what he has done. What he was after all along is that closeness. Ordinary experience agrees that effort done only to be finished tends to go hollow, and that boasting quietly spoils a kindness. The sutra does not promise that his father recovers, that the fear lifts or that the exhaustion eases. The medical care still has to be done well, and by the people trained to do it.
