Three Teachers, Three Answers
Narada Bhakti Sutras 28
Meaning · English
Some teachers say: knowledge is the one means to it. Others say: the two lean on each other, each resting on the other. The son of Brahma says: it is of the nature of its own fruit.
Three teachers answer one question: how does a person arrive at bhakti, loving devotion? Sadhana means the means, the road you travel to reach something. The first teachers say the road is jnana, knowing. First you understand who God is, and love follows. The second group speaks of anyonyashrayatva, which means resting on one another. Knowing supports love, and love sharpens knowing, like two sticks propped together that stand only because each holds the other. Neither comes first and neither works alone. The third voice is the son of Brahma, and his word is phalarupata, being of the form of the fruit. He says devotion is not a road to some later reward. It is the reward, already ripe. Sutra 25 gave the same reason for placing devotion above action, knowledge and yoga, and this answer is the one closest to it. Narada sets the three views side by side and does not pick a winner here. Taken together they answer a worry a newcomer would have: must I study first, or may I simply love? The sutras let both be true. Knowing has a real place, and so does love. Devotion is also complete in itself, so it needs no payment from anything else. What this asks of the listener is to hold all three answers and see how each speaks to a different stage.
A woman hums while she cooks. The humming is no step toward dinner, and nobody pays her for it. She hums because it is sweet. Devotion, in the third teacher's view, is like that humming: the sweetness is the fruit, and it is there while she sings.
1. This evening, for five minutes, do one small loving thing with no purpose: sing a line of a song you love, or say God's name quietly while you wash a cup. 2. Do not ask what it earns you. Notice only whether the doing itself was sweet. 3. Afterward, write one line: did anything you know about it make it warmer, or was it the doing? 4. Repeat tomorrow and compare.
A mother sits up at two in the morning with a feverish baby on her shoulder. She wonders whether she is doing it right, and whether she should have read more first. Her knowing does matter. She knows to check the temperature, to give fluids, and when to ring the doctor. Her love is what keeps her awake, and it needs no reason beyond the child. Each steadies the other, as the second teachers say. And the rocking itself, the warm weight and the small breath, is already what she wanted, which is the third teacher's point. Ordinary experience agrees that things done for their own sake hold us longer than things done for a payoff. The teaching does not promise that the fever will break, or that love replaces medical help. If the baby is truly unwell, the doctor is the right call, and her devotion is part of that call, not a rival to it.
