Meaning · English

It is seen to be so in a king's house, in meals, and in such things. By that alone the king is not pleased, nor is hunger quieted. Therefore that very devotion is to be taken up by those who long to be free.

Narada gives an example everyone can check. Take a king's house. Knowing about the king does not satisfy him. Take a meal. Knowing about the food does not quiet hunger. The sutra says this is how it is seen to be, and he calls it the same in every such case. Three words carry it. Paritosha is full satisfaction, the king's being truly pleased, from tosha, contentment. Kshudha-shanti is hunger's quieting, the stilling of an actual need. Mumukshu is one who longs to be free, from the sense of being released. The first two name results that only come from the thing itself: the king is pleased by what is offered to him, and hunger ends only by eating. Narada is answering a question the earlier sutras leave open. Sutra 25 says devotion is higher than action, knowledge and yoga because it is its own fruit. Sutra 28 reports teachers who call knowledge the means to it. Here Narada shows why talk about devotion cannot stand in for devotion. Description is not contact, and being well informed about a feast leaves a person hungry. So he concludes that this very bhakti, loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in, is what those who long for freedom should take up. The sutra asks the listener to move from learning about love of God toward the loving itself.

A person studies a photograph of the sea for years, learns its tides and its depth, and can name every wave. Then someone walks into the water and comes out wet. The photograph is knowledge about devotion. The water is devotion itself.

1. Choose one ordinary moment today, such as before a meal or while washing up, and spend two minutes speaking to God by name, as to someone present. 2. Say one plain thing: thanks, a worry, or simply that you are here. 3. Afterward, notice whether anything in you is more settled than when you only read or thought about God. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same time, instead of reading more.

A young man has read every article on how to apologise. He stands outside his brother's door after two years of silence, rehearsing sentences. Reading has given him words, yet his chest is still tight and the door is still shut. The verse, as Narada teaches it, points to the next step. Knowing about reconciliation does not reconcile, just as describing a meal does not feed anyone. The only thing left is to knock and say something clumsy and true. Narada's example asks him to put the notes down and let the meeting itself do what the notes cannot. Ordinary experience agrees on the plainest point: thinking about food does not settle an empty stomach. The limit is clear. The verse does not promise that the brother will open the door, or that the talk will go well. It says only that the satisfaction he wants lies on the far side of the act, not in preparing for it. Where the quarrel involves real harm or danger, a counsellor or doctor is a sound step in itself, and the verse does not replace them.
