Meaning · English
Secondary devotion comes in three kinds, according to the three gunas, the qualities that colour all things. Or it comes in kinds according to the state of the one who turns to God: the afflicted, and the others after. Of these, each earlier kind is better than the one that follows it, and leads to a better end.
Narada has just described love for God in its pure form. Now he turns to the other kind, called gauni, which means secondary or derived. Here devotion is mixed with something else. He sorts it in two ways. The first is by guna. A guna is a quality of nature that tints the mind, and there are three of them. The same act of worship looks different depending on which one colours it. The second is by the state of the person. Narada names the arta, the afflicted, one who turns to God in trouble, and adds "and the rest", other kinds of seekers who come with some need of their own. He does not list them here. Then comes the ranking. Each earlier kind is better than the next, and Narada says it leads to a better end. So the list is also a ladder. Why teach this at all? After describing love with no wish in it, a listener could ask what becomes of ordinary devotion, the kind that begins in fear or want. Narada does not throw it out. He calls it devotion, and he shows that it has grades and that a person can rise through them. It asks the listener to look honestly at what moves their own devotion, and to see that where it begins is not where it has to stay.
A staircase in an old house, where every step is a real step and yet each sits higher than the one before. Standing on the lowest one is still standing in the house. Devotion mixed with need or fear is the lower step, and the better kinds are the ones above it.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before sleep and recall the last time you turned to God, or to your deepest hope, in earnest. 2. Ask what brought you there: fear, a need, curiosity, or plain love. Name it without scolding yourself. 3. Tomorrow, say one short prayer or word of thanks when nothing is wrong and you want nothing. 4. Notice how it feels different from the prayer made in trouble.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his wife is in surgery. He has not prayed in years, and he is praying now, bargaining and afraid. Afterwards he is ashamed of it, as if the prayer were not real. Narada would not shame him. His prayer is the devotion of the afflicted, and the sutra counts it as devotion, only secondary. It also does not call that the last word. It says there are kinds, and that an earlier kind is better than a later one. The man can then see where his own prayer stands: it began in fear, and it can be moved toward gratitude or simple love when the fear passes. He does not have to pretend he began higher than he did. Ordinary experience agrees that what first brings a person to something is often not what keeps them there. The limit is plain. The sutra does not say the prayer will change the surgery, and it does not ease the waiting. The man still needs the surgeons, and he still needs people beside him.
