The Half Woman

Brahma had made all the creatures, every one of them, and they would not grow. They did not multiply. Whatever he made stayed as many as he had made it, and no more. This weighed on him, and he became sick with worry, tormented by his own grief. Then a voice spoke out of the sky. It said, "Make creation that is born from a pair." Brahma heard it and agreed that this was the way. But he saw the trouble at once. From Shiva, no line of women had ever come forth. There were no women in the world to make a pair with. Brahma, born of the lotus, found he could not do it. He thought it through to the end. Without the power of Shambhu, these creatures could never be born. Only Shiva could open this door.

So Brahma began to practice austerity. He turned his thoughts to the Supreme Lord, Shiva, and he did not picture him alone. He pictured him joined with the goddess Shiva, the highest Shakti, and he held that image in his heart with love. His tapas was fierce and complete. It did not take long. Shiva was pleased, and quickly. The Lord entered the form that grants desires, the form of his own full awareness, and he became Ardhanarinara, half woman and half man. In that shape Hara came before Brahma. Brahma saw Shankara, the god, together with his Shakti. He fell flat on the ground like a staff, rose, folded his hands, and praised him. Then the great god Mahadeva, the maker of the world, answered him, in a voice as deep as thunder in a cloud.

Shiva said, "Child, my child, great and fortunate one, grandfather of all beings. I know your heart, and I know what you want, truly and completely. You have done this tapas only so that creatures may increase. I am pleased with it, and I will give you what you ask for." He spoke these words gently, as sweet as his own nature. Then, from a part of his own body, Shiva drew out the goddess, Shiva, and set her apart from himself. Brahma looked at her. She was the highest Shakti, standing separate now, having come forth from Shiva. He bowed low before her, humbled, and began to ask her for what he needed.

Brahma said, "Shiva, long ago the god of gods, your husband, made me. Shambhu, the Supreme Self, set all creatures in my charge. I made the gods and the rest from my mind alone. But however often I make them, they do not increase. "I want to grow my creation by pairs. But no line of women has ever come from you, and so I have no power for it. Every Shakti has her source in you. Therefore I ask you, mistress of all, to give me the power to make the line of women. I bow to you. "I ask one more boon. Be born as a daughter to my son Daksha, so that the world may grow through a single Lord." The goddess heard him. She said, "So be it," and gave her power to Brahma.

From between her brows, the goddess Shiva brought forth one Shakti, shining like herself. Hara, ocean of mercy, looked at her and laughed, and said, "Goddess, Brahma has pleased you with his tapas. Be kind to him, and grant all he wishes." She bowed her head and took the Lord's command. At Brahma's word she was born as Daksha's daughter. Having given Brahma that matchless power, the goddess entered the body of Shambhu, and the Lord vanished. From that day, women have had their share in this world. Brahma was glad, and creation by pairs began. This, the half-woman form of Shiva, is a great blessing for the good. Whoever reads or hears this story will enjoy every pleasure and then reach the highest state.

ब्रह्मा ने सब प्राणियों को रच दिया था, एक-एक को, पर वे बढ़ते नहीं थे। उनकी वृद्धि नहीं होती थी। जितने उन्होंने बनाए, उतने ही बने रहे, उससे अधिक नहीं। यह बात उन्हें भारी पड़ी, और वे चिंता से रोगी हो गए, अपने ही शोक से पीड़ित। तब आकाश से एक वाणी बोली। उसने कहा, "जोड़े से उत्पन्न होने वाली सृष्टि रचो।" ब्रह्मा ने सुना और माना कि यही मार्ग है। पर उन्होंने तुरंत कठिनाई देख ली। शिव से नारियों का कोई कुल कभी प्रकट नहीं हुआ था। संसार में जोड़ा बनाने के लिए कोई नारी नहीं थी। कमल से उत्पन्न ब्रह्मा ने पाया कि वे यह नहीं कर सकते। उन्होंने अंत तक विचार किया। शम्भु की शक्ति के बिना ये प्राणी कभी जन्म नहीं ले सकते थे। केवल शिव ही यह द्वार खोल सकते थे।

तब ब्रह्मा तप करने लगे। उन्होंने परमेश्वर शिव का ध्यान किया, और उन्हें अकेले नहीं सोचा। उन्होंने उन्हें परम शक्ति शिवा के साथ जुड़ा हुआ ध्यान किया, और उस छवि को प्रेम से हृदय में धारण किए रहे। उनका तप उग्र और पूर्ण था। देर नहीं लगी। शिव प्रसन्न हुए, और शीघ्र ही। प्रभु ने कामनाएँ पूरी करने वाला रूप, अपनी पूर्ण चेतना का रूप, धारण किया, और अर्धनारीनर हो गए, आधे नारी और आधे नर। उसी रूप में हर ब्रह्मा के सामने आए। ब्रह्मा ने देव शंकर को उनकी शक्ति के साथ देखा। वे डंडे की तरह भूमि पर गिर पड़े, उठे, हाथ जोड़े और उनकी स्तुति की। तब जगत् के रचयिता महादेव ने बादल जैसी गंभीर वाणी में उन्हें उत्तर दिया।

शिव बोले, "वत्स, मेरे वत्स, महान और भाग्यवान, सब प्राणियों के पितामह। मैं तुम्हारा हृदय जानता हूँ, और जो तुम चाहते हो वह भी, सच्चाई से और पूरी तरह। तुमने यह तप केवल इसलिए किया कि प्राणी बढ़ें। मैं इससे प्रसन्न हूँ, और जो तुम माँगते हो वह दूँगा।" उन्होंने ये शब्द कोमलता से कहे, अपने स्वभाव जितने ही मधुर। फिर शिव ने अपने ही शरीर के एक भाग से देवी शिवा को खींचकर अपने से अलग कर दिया। ब्रह्मा ने उन्हें देखा। वे परम शक्ति थीं, अब अलग खड़ी, शिव से प्रकट हुईं। उन्होंने विनम्र होकर उनके सामने झुककर प्रणाम किया और उनसे अपनी आवश्यकता माँगने लगे।

ब्रह्मा बोले, "शिवा, बहुत पहले देवों के देव, आपके पति ने मुझे रचा। परम आत्मा शम्भु ने सब प्राणियों को मेरे अधीन किया। मैंने देवताओं और अन्य को केवल मन से रचा। पर कितनी ही बार मैं उन्हें रचूँ, वे बढ़ते नहीं। मैं अपनी सृष्टि को जोड़ों से बढ़ाना चाहता हूँ। पर आपसे नारियों का कोई कुल कभी नहीं निकला, इसलिए मुझमें इसकी शक्ति नहीं है। हर शक्ति का स्रोत आप में है। इसलिए हे सबकी स्वामिनी, मैं आपसे माँगता हूँ कि मुझे नारी-कुल रचने की शक्ति दें। मैं आपको प्रणाम करता हूँ। मैं एक और वर माँगता हूँ। मेरे पुत्र दक्ष की पुत्री बनकर जन्म लें, जिससे एक ही प्रभु के द्वारा संसार बढ़े।" देवी ने उनकी सुनी। उन्होंने कहा, "ऐसा ही हो," और अपनी शक्ति ब्रह्मा को दे दी।

अपनी भौंहों के बीच से देवी शिवा ने अपने ही जैसी दीप्तिमान एक शक्ति प्रकट की। करुणा के सागर हर ने उसे देखा और हँसकर कहा, "देवी, ब्रह्मा ने तप से तुम्हें प्रसन्न किया है। उन पर कृपा करो, और वे जो चाहें सब दो।" उसने सिर झुकाया और प्रभु की आज्ञा स्वीकार की। ब्रह्मा के वचन से वह दक्ष की पुत्री होकर जन्मी। ब्रह्मा को वह अनुपम शक्ति देकर शिवा शम्भु के शरीर में समा गईं, और प्रभु अंतर्धान हो गए। उस दिन से इस संसार में नारियों का भी अपना भाग रहा है। ब्रह्मा प्रसन्न हुए, और जोड़े से सृष्टि आरंभ हुई। शिव का यह अर्धनारी रूप सज्जनों के लिए बड़ा वरदान है। जो इस कथा को पढ़ेगा या सुनेगा, वह सब सुख भोगकर फिर परम गति पाएगा।
