Sanatkumara asked Nandishvara how he had come to Shiva, born as a part of Mahadeva. Nandishvara told him to listen closely. There was a sage named Silada, strong and righteous, who wanted a child. His ancestors had urged him on, and he lived on grains gleaned from the fields. He turned to Indra and performed a fierce, almost unbearable austerity, steady in his vow for a long time. At last Indra, Satakratu, lord of the gods, came to give him a boon. He said, "I am pleased with you, sinless one. Choose your boons." Silada bowed, praised him, and said with folded hands, "If you are pleased, lord, I want a son who is not born from a womb, who cannot die, and who keeps his vows well."

Indra answered, "I can give you a son born of a womb, and mortal. I cannot give you one who never dies. Such sons do not exist. Even Hari and Brahma are bound to death, and their lifespans are set down in the scriptures, so how could anyone else escape it? Give up this hope, best of brahmins, and take a son that suits you. But Rudra, the great lord, can be won over. A son without womb and without death is very hard to get. Neither I, nor Vishnu, nor Brahma can give him. Worship Mahadeva for that son. He is lord of all and all-powerful, and he will give you the child." Having said this, Indra blessed him and went back to his own world with the gods. Silada began to worship Mahadeva.

Silada gave himself wholly to this. A thousand divine years passed for him like a single moment. Ants and creatures with needle mouths that drink blood swarmed over him, and an anthill grew around his body. Inside that burrow his flesh, blood and skin were gone, and the great sage was left as bones. Then Shiva, pleased, showed him his divine form, which people of crooked mind can never reach. The holder of the trident said, "I will give you a boon." But Silada was lost in deep absorption and did not hear him. Only when Shiva touched him with his hand did the sage let his austerity go. He opened his eyes, saw Shiva with the moon on his brow, and fell at his feet. In a voice thick with joy he praised the supreme lord.

Shiva said, "What is this austerity for? I will give you a son who knows everything and has mastered every scripture." Silada, trembling with joy, answered, "Lord, if you are pleased, I want a son equal to you, who cannot die and is not born from a womb." Shiva said, "Long ago Brahma worshipped me, and the sages and the best of the gods asked that I take birth. I will be your son, named Nandi, born without a womb. You will be father to me, the father of the worlds." Then he looked at the bowing sage and vanished on the spot. Silada went back to his hermitage and told the sages. After some time he was ploughing the ground for a sacrifice, and at Shiva's word I was born from the earth, blazing like the fire at the end of an age.

Nandishvara continued, "When I was born, clouds that had held back their rain now poured, and the sages rained down flowers. Brahma and the gods came, with their wives, and Vishnu, and Shiva with Ambika. There was a great festival, and the Apsarases danced. They honoured me and praised the lingam. Then they praised Silada and the two divine parents, and went back to their homes. Silada saw me as I was then, a child with three eyes and four arms, matted hair like a crown, a trident in hand, shining like the sun at the world's end. He bowed in great joy and said, "Because you have made me glad, your name is Nandi. I bow to you, god of joy." He walked home with me like a poor man who has found treasure. At the hermitage I gave up that shape and became a human child."

Seeing me as a human child, my father wept, surrounded by his people. Then he did all the birth rites for me. Silada, son of Salankayana, taught me all the Vedas with their branches, and other scriptures, by my fifth year. When I was seven, the sages Mitra and Varuna came to the hermitage by the command of the lord. After being honoured they looked at me again and again, and said, "Nandi knows every scripture, but his life is short. We see no more than a year of it." Hearing this Silada embraced me and wept, then fell like a dead man. I remembered Shiva's feet and asked, "Father, why do you shake and cry?" He said, "Your early death grieves me. Who will take this sorrow from me?" I answered, "Gods, demons, Yama, Death himself may rage, and still I will not die young. I swear it." I said, "Not through austerity or learning, but by worshipping Mahadeva I will beat death." I bowed, circled my father, and went into the forest.

There I sat in a lonely place and practised fierce austerity, hard even for sages. I held Shiva in the lotus of my heart, three-eyed, ten-armed, five-faced, and repeated the Rudra mantra on the north bank of a holy river. Shiva said, "Son of Silada, I am pleased. Ask." I bowed and praised him. He lifted me, tearful, and said, "Why fear death? I sent the two sages. You are my equal, ageless, a lord of my hosts." He tied his own lotus garland on me, and I had three eyes and ten arms like him. He poured water from his hair and said, "Be Nandi," and five rivers began to flow. Shiva's hosts came and Brahma anointed me lord of them. I married Suyasa, daughter of the Maruts, and was given a throne and a white parasol. Shiva said, "Where you are I am, and where I am you are." Shiva's wife Uma gave me devotion, and Silada became chief of the hosts. Whoever hears this account with faith gains every happiness here and the highest goal after.
