Nandishvara spoke to Sanatkumara. He said that hearing this story makes devotion to Shiva firm. Bhairava, he said, is the full form of Shiva, the Supreme Self. Fools do not know this, deluded by Shiva's own maya. Even Vishnu with his four arms and Brahma with his four faces do not know Shiva's greatness, and that is no wonder, for Shiva's power is hard to know. Shiva is everywhere, yet the dull-minded cannot see him. He is beyond mind and speech, and the world takes him for just another god. Then Nandishvara began an old tale. On the bright peak of Meru, Brahma sat. All the divine sages came to him, bowed with joined palms, and asked: 'Lord of creation, tell us truly, what is the one imperishable reality?'
Brahma, deluded by Shiva's maya, did not grasp the highest truth. He answered the sages: 'Listen carefully. I am the source of the world, the creator, self-born, unborn, the lord. I am the beginning of all things, Brahman, the one pure Self. I set the worlds going and I draw them back. No one is higher than I am.' Vishnu was sitting there. He laughed, and in anger, deluded by the same maya, he said: 'Brahma, this is foolishness. You speak without knowing the supreme reality. I am the maker of all worlds, the Supreme Self, Narayana, the lord of maya. You create at my command. The life of the worlds does not go on without me.' So the two quarreled, each wanting to win, and they turned to the four Vedas to settle it.
Brahma and Vishnu asked the Vedas, who stood there in bodily form: 'You are our authority. Say plainly what the one imperishable reality is.' The Vedas first said they would speak only if the two were willing to accept it. Then each answered. The Rigveda said: 'He in whom all beings dwell, from whom all comes forth, whom they call the highest reality, he is Rudra, and he alone.' The Yajurveda said: 'He who is worshipped by all sacrifices and by yoga, through whom we have our authority, is Shiva, the one who sees all.' The Samaveda said: 'He by whom this universe turns, whom yogis contemplate, by whose light the world shines, he is Tryambaka, the Supreme.' The Atharvaveda said: 'He whom devotees see by grace, the one liberation, beyond sorrow, is Shankara.'
Brahma and Vishnu heard this and smiled, still deeply deluded. They said to the Vedas: 'Have you lost your senses? How can this be? He is the lord of the ganas, always at play with Shiva's consort. He goes naked, covered in dust, with matted hair, riding a bull, wearing snakes as ornaments. How can he be the Supreme Brahman, free of all attachment?' Then Om, the sacred syllable, took form before them, formless yet shaped, and said: 'The Lord never plays with a power that is other than himself. This power, Shiva, is his own nature, made of bliss. She has not come to him from outside. He is self-luminous and eternal.' Even so, the ignorance of Brahma and Vishnu did not end, because of the maya of Shrikantha.
Then a great light appeared between the two, filling all the space between heaven and earth. In the middle of that circle of light, Brahma and Vishnu saw a figure in the shape of a man, wonderful beyond measure. Brahma's fifth head blazed with anger. He thought: 'Who is this, standing between us in a man's shape?' And as he wondered, the three-eyed one appeared in a moment, the great person, dark blue and red, a trident in his hand, an eye in his forehead, adorned with serpents and the crescent moon. Brahma saw him and laughed, still deluded. He said: 'Nilalohita, I know you. Do not be afraid, moon-crested one. You came out of my forehead long ago, and I gave you the name Rudra because you cried. Come to me for shelter, my son. I will protect you.'
Ishvara heard Brahma's proud words and grew so angry that he seemed ready to end the world. In his anger he brought forth a man named Bhairava, blazing with fierce light. Ishvara said: 'Kalabhairava, you must first punish this lotus-born one. You shine like Time itself, so you are Kalaraja. You can bear the whole universe, and you are fearsome, so you are called Bhairava. Even Time will fear you, so you are Kalabhairava. You crush the wicked when you are angry, so you are Amardaka. You devour your devotees' sins at once, so you are Papabhakshana. Kashi, my city of liberation, is dearer than all places. You shall always rule it. You will be the punisher of the sinners there, and Chitragupta will write down their good and bad deeds.' Bhairava accepted these boons.
Then, at once, Kalabhairava cut off Brahma's fifth head with the tip of the nail of his left finger. The limb that offends is the one to be punished, and that head had spoken the insult. Vishnu saw the severed head and was terrified. He praised Shankara devotedly with the Shatarudriya hymns, and the frightened Brahma also recited the Shatarudriya. In that moment both lost their pride. They understood that Shiva is the Supreme Brahman, whose nature is being, awareness and bliss, beyond all qualities. Nandishvara said: as long as there is pride, knowledge stays hidden. Giving up pride, a person knows the Supreme Lord. Shiva strikes down the proud and so became the remover of pride. Seeing them humbled, Mahadeva was pleased and made them fearless. Then he spoke to Bhairava: 'Hold the skull of Brahma, whom you must honor as Vishnu is honored. Wander and beg, keeping the skull vow, to show the world how Brahmahatya is washed away.'
Shiva made a woman called Brahmahatya, the guilt of killing a brahmin, and said to Bhairava: 'She will follow you. When she reaches Varanasi she will lose her hold on you. Everywhere else she can enter.' Then Shiva vanished. Bhairava went through the three worlds carrying the skull, and Brahmahatya followed him without leaving. One day he came to Vishnu's house. Vishnu fell flat on the ground before him and, with Lakshmi, praised him: 'Blessed are my eyes today.' He asked why the Lord begged for alms. Bhairava smiled: 'I cut off Brahma's head with a nail. I do this vow to undo that sin.' Lakshmi put alms in his bowl. Vishnu asked Brahmahatya to let him go, but she refused. Bhairava offered Vishnu a boon. Vishnu asked only never to be parted from his feet. At last Bhairava entered Varanasi. Brahmahatya cried out and sank into the underworld. The skull fell from his hand, and that place became Kapalamochana. Bhairava stayed in Kashi, devouring his devotees' sins. On the eighth day of the dark half of Margashirsha, those who fast and keep vigil before Kalabhairava are freed from great sins. Whoever hears of Bhairava's coming is freed from distress.
