Nandishvara spoke to the sage Sanatkumara. He reminded him that Virabhadra, the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, is one of the forms Shiva has taken, and that this was told fully in the story of Sati. Now, out of affection, he would tell of another form: Sharabha, which the Sadashiva took for the good of the gods, bright as blazing fire. He added that Shiva's descents cannot be counted. One might sooner count the stars in the sky, the grains of dust on the earth, or the drops of falling rain. Still, he would tell what he had heard, as best he understood it. This account, he said, shows Shiva's supreme power.

It begins with two doorkeepers, Jaya and Vijaya, whom the sages had cursed. They were born as the sons of Diti and the sage Kashyapa: Hiranyakashipu first, and then his strong younger brother Hiranyaksha. Both had once been attendants of the gods. Brahma had asked Vishnu to lift the earth, and Vishnu took the form of a boar and killed Hiranyaksha. Hiranyakashipu heard that his brother, dear to him as his own life, was dead, and his anger at Vishnu was enormous. He performed austerities for ten thousand years. Brahma, pleased, granted him a boon: that no one created by Brahma could kill him.

Hiranyakashipu went to the city called Shonita and summoned the gods from every side. He brought the three worlds under his rule and reigned without a rival. He crushed the gods and sages, wiped out righteous conduct, and tormented the twice-born. His own son, Prahlada, was devoted to Vishnu. The demon king hated the boy for it, and his enmity toward Hari grew worse. Then, at twilight, Vishnu burst suddenly out of a pillar in the assembly hall, in rage, in the body of the Man-Lion. His form was terrible and blazed with fire, and it terrified the chief demons. The Man-Lion struck down the demons there at once, and Hiranyakashipu rose to fight him.

The battle lasted a short while, and it was frightening to watch; the hair of everyone present stood on end. At dusk the Lord dragged the demon king to the threshold. The gods watched from the sky as he placed him on his lap and tore open his belly with his claws, killing him in front of the dwellers of heaven. The world found some ease, though not the gods themselves. Drums sounded. Prahlada was astonished, and Lakshmi was astonished at the marvelous form of Hari. Yet the demon was dead and still there was no peace. The Man-Lion's fury did not die down. It tormented the whole world again, and the gods stood far off in fear, asking what would happen now.

Brahma and the others, shaken by the heat of the Man-Lion's anger, sent Prahlada to him to calm it. Having been asked by all of them, Prahlada went. The Man-Lion, ocean of mercy, embraced him against his chest. His heart cooled, but the blaze of his anger still did not stop. So the gods, with Brahma and the sages, went to Shankara for refuge and praised him. They said: "God of gods, Mahadeva, you love those who come to you. Protect us. When the ocean was churned and the poison rose, you drank it and saved us, and so you are called Blue-Throated. At the mere sound of your name all sorrow dissolves. Now we are tormented by the Man-Lion's flame. Surely you can quiet it."

Shankara, loving to his devotees, answered them gently and gave them his promise of safety. "Go back to your own places, Brahma and all of you. Do not be afraid. I will end this trouble. It is my vow that when anyone takes refuge in me, his sorrow is gone. One who has come to me is dearer to me than my own life." The gods were filled with joy and went home, remembering Shankara. Then the Lord resolved to put an end to the great blaze of the Man-Lion. He called to mind Virabhadra, strong and his own fearsome form. Virabhadra came at once, laughing, leading his hosts, ringing with their laughter and surrounded by crores of fierce Man-Lion shapes. He asked why Shiva had called him and what he should do.

Shiva told him: "Terror has come at the wrong time, even to the gods. Quiet this Man-Lion's fire. First try soothing him with gentle words. If that fails, show him my terrible aspect." Virabhadra went in a calm form and spoke to Hari as a father speaks to his own son. He recalled Hari's descents as the fish, the boar, the dwarf, and the Man-Lion who killed Hiranyakashipu and protected Prahlada. He asked him to draw back the dreadful form. The Man-Lion grew angrier. "Go back where you came from. I will destroy this world now. Everything that has power is my power. I am Time, the death of death." Virabhadra laughed and answered. "Do you not know Shiva, the destroyer, who holds the Pinaka bow? Your words lead only to ruin. Brahma, born from your navel lotus, called Shankara forth from his forehead. I was made to destroy you. You are driven by Shiva's power like a potter's wheel." He reminded him of the tortoise shell, the boar's tusks, and the burning of Vishnu's disguise on the trident. He told him to stop, or death would fall on him like a thunderbolt on a stump.

The Man-Lion, mad with rage, roared and rushed to seize him. Then a vast, fearsome radiance filled the sky from Virabhadra's body: golden, soft, not of the sun or of fire, and beyond comparison. All other lights sank into it. From it Shiva appeared as Sharabha: a thousand arms, matted hair, half-moon on his head, wings, a beak, a black throat, four feet, claws like thunderbolts, and a voice like thunder. The enemy's strength vanished at the sight. He beat Hari with his wings, bound his legs with his tail, and carried him off into the sky, with the gods and sages watching. Hari, helpless, praised him with a hundred and eight names and begged that his pride be removed whenever it returned. Then Shiva spoke to the gods. He told them that as water poured into water, Vishnu had merged into Shiva, and that the Man-Lion deserved to be honored by his devotees. Then he vanished. Virabhadra took the Man-Lion's hide, and from then on Shankara wore it as his garment, and the head hung in his garland of skulls as its leader. The gods, free of fear, went home. Whoever hears or reads this story receives blessings and, at the end, reaches Rudra's world and union with Shiva.
