Meaning · English

Do not brood over the loss of worldly things, for the devotee has already offered self, world and even the Vedas to God. When devotion is won, the ordinary business of the world is not to be dropped. Give up the longing for its fruits, and keep doing the work that supports devotion.

Narada names a fear: what if devotion costs me my livelihood, my standing, my comforts? He answers in two parts. The first key word is nivedita, offered. It comes from a root meaning to make known or present something to another. The devotee has presented everything to God: the self (atma), the ordinary world (loka) and the sacred learning (veda). Something already given away cannot be lost in the old way. So worry over worldly loss has no ground, Narada says. The second key word is phalatyaga, giving up the fruit. Phala is fruit, the payoff; tyaga is letting go. Narada does not tell the devotee to walk out of daily life. Lokavyavahara, the dealings of the world, such as work, family and duty, are not to be abandoned even after devotion is won. What goes is the grasping after results. The last clause adds that the means to devotion (sadhana) must still be practised. Letting go of fruits is not laziness. The work continues, the practice continues, and only the clinging drops away. The sutra is taught here because a listener who has just heard that devotion is higher than everything else will ask whether it means ruin or withdrawal. Narada says neither. The listener is asked to stay in life, work fully, and hold the outcome loosely.

A postman carries a bag of letters across town in the rain. He walks every street with care and hands each one over. He does not read them or keep them, and no envelope is his to lose. The devotee works the same way: fully, with everything already delivered to God.

1. Pick one task today that you care about, such as a message to write, a meal to cook or a bill to settle. 2. Before you start, say quietly: I will do this well, and the result is not mine to hold. 3. Work at it without checking for praise or outcome until it is done. 4. Afterward, notice for a minute whether you are still turning the result over. If you are, set it down and go on to the next ordinary thing.

A shopkeeper opens up on the morning the rent is due. Sales have been thin for weeks. His chest is tight, he keeps checking the till, and he snaps at the boy who sweeps the floor. The sutra changes the moment in steps. First, the worry is named for what it is: brooding over a loss that has not happened. Second, the work stays. He still opens the shutter, arranges the stock and greets each customer properly, because Narada says worldly dealings are not to be dropped. Third, the clinging to the fruit loosens: today's takings are not his to command, only the care he gives each sale. Ordinary experience bears this out, since a mind fixed on the result tends to do the present task badly. The sutra does not promise that the rent will be paid, that the shop will survive, or that fear will vanish. It also does not replace practical steps such as speaking to the landlord, or help from a doctor if anxiety becomes more than he can carry.
