Guarding the Ears
Narada Bhakti Sutras 63
Meaning · English
Talk about women, about wealth, about those who deny God, and about the doings of enemies is not to be listened to. Pride, show of piety and the faults that go with them are to be given up.
Narada gives two short instructions. The first is about what goes in through the ear. The word shravaniya means 'fit to be heard', and the sutra says four kinds of talk are not fit: talk of women, talk of wealth, talk of unbelievers, and tales of enemies. Each of these stirs something. Talk of women, as the sutra puts it, feeds desire. Talk of wealth feeds greed. Arguments with unbelievers feed quarrel, and tales of enemies feed anger and grudge. The second instruction is about what a person carries inside. Abhimana is pride, the sense of being someone important. Dambha is hypocrisy, wearing devotion as a costume for others to see. The sutra says these and their kind are to be dropped. The reason is plain from the sutras around it. Narada is describing a love for God that grows quietly and is easily crowded out. What a person hears shapes what he thinks about, and what he thinks about shapes what he wants. Pride and hypocrisy turn devotion into a performance, and a performance has an audience, not a beloved. So the sutra asks the listener to be careful about what he lets in and honest about what he displays.
A small lamp burns in a doorway where the draught keeps coming. Its owner cups a hand around it and moves it to a quiet corner. Devotion is the flame, and the draught is the steady talk of desire, money and quarrels, along with pride and pretence.
1. Today, notice one conversation, feed or programme that leaves you hungry, envious or angry. Note which of the four it is: desire, money, argument or grudge. 2. For one evening, leave that one alone. Step out of the room or switch it off, without announcing why. 3. Before sleep, ask yourself whether you did any good act today only so it would be seen. Next time, do one small kindness that nobody will hear about.
At a cousin's wedding, a mother stands with a plate of food while two relatives lower their voices and begin on who earned what, whose marriage is failing, and who wronged the family. She feels the pull to join in, and later she lies awake rehearsing it all. Ordinary experience bears this out: what we take in at night tends to replay in the mind. The sutra would change the moment in small steps. She notices what the talk is stirring in her, whether envy or anger. She steps toward the buffet or helps an elder with a seat. If she speaks, she says something true and kind, with no show of being above the gossip, since the sutra also warns against pride and pretence. The sutra does not promise that the relatives will stop, that the old quarrel will end, or that her worry about money will go away. It speaks only of what she lets in and what she puts on.
