Meaning · English
Every action is offered to Him. Desire, anger, pride and the like are to be turned toward Him alone. Breaking past the threefold pattern, love is to be practised, a love whose form is worship as His constant servant and His constant beloved. Love alone is to be done. Love alone.
Four words carry the sutra. Arpita means offered, placed in front of someone. Kama is desire, krodha is anger, abhimana is pride. Prema is love, the word the sutra ends on twice. The first clause says that conduct, everything a devotee does, is handed over to God. The second says what to do with the hot feelings: desire, anger and pride are not cut out but pointed at Him. Wanting, being angry, being proud all have somewhere to go. The third clause says love breaks past the threefold. The commentators usually read this as the three qualities that colour the mind. Love is then no longer driven by them. Its form is dasya, serving, and kanta, being the beloved: two ways of loving that never lapse, the servant who waits on Him and the beloved who longs for Him. The gopis of Vraja are the sutras' own example of such love. The repeated last words close the matter. Narada has spent many sutras on what to avoid. Here he says what remains to be done. Strong feelings do not vanish, so they are given a single direction. The sutra asks the listener to let love be the one thing practised.
A gas flame on the stove can scorch a wall or cook the evening meal. Nobody puts it out; they set a pot over it. Desire, anger and pride are that flame, and God is the pot the sutra sets over it.
1. Tonight, notice one flash of wanting, irritation or pride, and say its name quietly to yourself. 2. Before acting on it, spend one minute telling God about it, in your own words, as you would a close friend. 3. Then do the next small task of the evening, such as washing a cup or answering a message, as something handed to Him. 4. At bedtime, recall whether the feeling felt different after it was spoken to Him.
A mother sits at the window at midnight. Her son said he would be home by ten. Worry has turned into anger, and she has rehearsed what she will say when the door opens. The sutra gives that anger an address. She does not pretend she is calm. She admits that the anger is real and that it grew out of care. Then she says it to God, plainly: the fear, the irritation, the wish to have him safe. By the time the key turns, some of the heat has gone into the telling, and the first thing she says at the door may be his name rather than an accusation. Ordinary experience bears this out: feeling spoken aloud, even to no listener, tends to loosen its grip. The sutra teaches this as Narada's way of loving, with God as the one to whom desire, anger and pride are given. It does not promise that her son will be safe, that the worry will end, or that anger has no place in a hard conversation afterward. Nor does it replace a phone call to someone who can help.
