Narada Bhakti Sutras 67

Meaning · English

The single-minded devotees are the best of all. Their throats choke, their hair stands on end, and tears fill their eyes as they speak to one another in faltering words. They purify their families, and the earth itself.

Three words carry the sutra. Bhakta is the devotee, one who shares in love for God; the root bhaj means to share in, to take part. Ekantin means one whose whole attention rests on one point; eka is one, anta is end or aim. Mukhya means chief, the one who stands at the front. Pavayanti means they purify, make clean. Narada says the single-minded devotees are the best of devotees. Then he shows how you would know them. The body gives them away. The throat tightens, the hair rises, the eyes fill. When they talk with one another their speech breaks and stammers, because feeling is larger than the words they have. Nothing here is put on. The sutra describes love that has overtaken the speaker. Then comes what such people do for others. Their families are made clean, and so is the earth they walk on. Narada gives no method for this. It simply follows from who they are. Why is this taught here? The sutras before it have been clearing away pride, show and anger, and asking that all conduct be offered to God. Narada now points to the people in whom that has finished its work. He is answering a quiet question: what does a life look like when devotion is complete? It looks like this, and it blesses everyone near it. The sutra asks the listener to look for love of this kind, and to hold it in honour.

A single lamp lit in a dark courtyard. It does nothing but burn, yet every doorway around it gets light, and the walls and the ground are brightened as well. The devotee is the lamp, and the blessing on family and earth is the light falling without being aimed.

1. Tonight, spend five minutes recalling one person you know whose love for God, or for others, seemed plain and unshowy. Notice what in their face or voice told you so. 2. Tomorrow, when you speak of something you love, let your words be simple and unpolished. Notice whether you start to perform. 3. This week, say one quiet word of thanks to an older family member for the goodness that reached you through them.

A grandmother is at her granddaughter's wedding. The music starts, the girl walks in, and the old woman's throat closes. She cannot speak, her eyes fill, and she grips her sister's hand and says only half a sentence. Nobody asks her to explain. The sutra reads this moment as a sign of love that is whole, not as weakness. The body is plain about it. A tight throat, goosebumps and tears are ordinary physical responses to strong feeling, and most people have met them at a wedding, a birth or a farewell. Ordinary experience also confirms that words fail when feeling is large, and that people near someone who loves openly often grow gentler themselves. So in that moment the verse would change a few small things. She would not hurry to hide the tears. She would not reach for a speech. She would let the broken half-sentence be enough, and the family around her would receive it. The text teaches that such love cleans a household. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that this feeling can be summoned, or that tears prove devotion. Nor does it ease grief, heal illness or replace a doctor when a racing heart or chest pain needs one.
