Making Holy Things Holier

Narada Bhakti Sutras 69

Meaning · English

They make holy places holier. They make good deeds better deeds. They make the scriptures more truly scripture. For they are made of Him, filled with Him, and nothing in them stands apart from Him.

Three small words carry this sutra. First, tirtha: a ford, a crossing place, the name for a pilgrimage site where a person crosses over. Second, sukarma: su is good, karma is action, so a deed done well. Third, sacchastra: sat is true or real, shastra is teaching, so scripture that is truly scripture. The ending that joins each of them means to make into. The devotees make holy places into real crossings, deeds into good deeds, and books into true teaching. The last word, tanmaya, gives the reason. Tat is that, meaning Him, and maya here means made of. The devotees are made of Him. Narada does not say they visit sacred places, perform good acts and read scripture. He says they give these things their worth. A place is holy because someone arrives there with love. A deed is good because love is behind it. A text speaks truly when it is read by someone absorbed in what it points to. This follows from the sutras before it, which have shown the devotee's whole life offered to God. If the person is filled with Him, whatever the person touches is filled too. The sutra asks nothing new of the listener. It shows what absorption does to the world around it.

Think of the same set of steel pots in a rented flat and in a grandmother's kitchen. In her kitchen the pots feel warm, and the food tastes of her. Nothing was added to the pots. The devotee is the grandmother: place, deed and scripture all take on the character of the one who handles them.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, a walk, or answering a message, and give it ten minutes. 2. Before starting, say silently, "This is for Him." Then do it slowly and fully, without hurrying to the end. 3. If you read any scripture or prayer today, read one line and stay with it a minute before moving on. 4. That evening, notice whether the task or the line felt different from the same thing done on autopilot.

A man sits on a crowded bus to a temple town, tired, cramped, annoyed at the child kicking his seat. He thinks the journey is the dull part and the temple is the real thing. The sutra turns that around, as the text teaches it: the devotee does not wait to arrive at holiness but brings it along. So on the bus he would hold the child's restlessness with patience, give up his window seat to an older woman, and say the name he loves under his breath. At the temple he would stand in the queue as part of the offering, and on the way home he would read a single line of scripture and let it settle instead of racing through a chapter. Ordinary experience agrees with one part of this: the same chore feels different depending on the attention and care behind it. The sutra does not promise that the crowd thins, the fatigue lifts, or that sickness and worry stay away. A person who is unwell still needs rest and a doctor, and the teaching does not replace either.
