Meaning · English

Ancestors rejoice, gods dance, and the earth finds it has a protector. Among such people there is no division by birth, learning, looks, family, wealth, work, or the like. For they are His own.

Four words carry the sutra. Pitaras are the ancestors, the departed fathers of a family line. Sanatha comes from sa, with, and natha, lord: having a protector, like a house that has an owner who looks after it. Bheda is distinction, from bhid, to split: the cuts people make to sort one another. Tadiya means 'His own', those who belong to God. Narada first says that when such devotees live, the ancestors rejoice and the gods dance. The family line behind a devotee and the powers above are both glad. The earth is no longer unprotected. This follows the claims just before it, that devotees cleanse their families and the world. Here that cleansing is shown as joy in every direction. Then he lists what does not count among them: birth, learning, beauty, family, wealth, and occupation, with 'and so on' for the rest. These are the usual ways people rank one another. Narada gives one reason they fall away: 'for they are His own.' A person who belongs to God is marked by that belonging, and every other mark fades beside it. The question answered is whether a devotee's standing depends on pedigree, scholarship, or money. Narada says it does not. The sutra asks the listener to see that love is the only credential he names.

Picture a village cricket team in matching shirts. One boy's father owns the shop, another's sweeps the lane, and one has top marks. Once the shirt is on, the team sheet lists only names. Belonging to God works as that shirt does: one mark worn by all, covering the labels people usually read first.

1. Tonight, notice one moment today when you sized someone up by their job, accent, clothes, or family. 2. Say a short silent line: 'This person is also His own.' Hold it for the length of one breath. 3. Tomorrow, greet someone you usually overlook, such as a cleaner, a guard, or a delivery person. Use their name if you know it, and give them your full attention for one minute. 4. At day's end, note whether anything in you softened.

A mother stands at the school gate on the first day in a new town. The other parents have already formed small groups, and she can tell which are sorted by who arrived in a car, who has the right surname, and who dresses well. She hangs back, and she catches herself ranking the others too. The sutra gives her a different way to read the gate. Narada teaches that among those who belong to God, birth, wealth, looks, and work make no difference. So she can set down the sorting she was about to do, and she can walk to the woman standing alone and say hello without calculating what that woman is worth. Ordinary experience agrees that people who feel ranked turn guarded, and people who feel simply welcomed relax. The sutra does not promise she will be accepted by the groups, and it does not end real differences in money or opportunity in the world. It speaks of how a devotee sees, and it offers no fix for loneliness on a hard first day.
