What Remains After Denial

Brahma Sutras 3.2.21

Meaning · English

It denies only the extent of Brahman that was set out, and then it says more beyond that.

An earlier passage of the Upanishad showed two forms of Brahman, the solid and the formless, and then said 'not this, not this'. The question is what that double denial removes. Shankara asks whether it removes both the forms and Brahman itself. He says no. A denial always needs something left standing. If everything were denied, nothing would remain to deny it, and the result would be a void. So the sutra says the denial removes only the stated extent, the forms and their display, which are taken to be all there is to Brahman. It does not remove Brahman. Then the text goes on: it speaks of something beyond, called the real of the real. The phrase 'not this' therefore clears away a limit, and what it clears away for is a further statement about what is. Ramanuja reads the denial as rejecting limits on Brahman's qualities, not the forms of the world, and Madhva reads it as denying any lack in Brahman.

A guide shows a visitor round a city and says, 'It is not just the market, and not just the harbour.' He has not abolished the city. He has refused to let two places stand for all of it. The visitor is then led on to the rest. The denial maps to the double 'not this', and the city to Brahman.

The move resembles what philosophers call the apophatic or negative way, and also a plain point of logic: a negation is only meaningful against something it leaves in place. Total denial, as in some forms of nihilism, undercuts itself. Cognitive science offers a loose parallel in that we only identify an object by what it is not, against a background. Beyond that the comparison stops. Whether there is a reality that exceeds every description, and whether it is conscious, cannot be tested by physics or psychology. Physicalists would say the remainder is simply unobserved nature, and idealists would say it is mind. Philosophy has not settled it, and the sutra's claim stays a metaphysical position, not an empirical result.
