Dream Falls Short
Brahma Sutras 3.2.3
Meaning · English
But the dream is mere maya, because its own nature is not fully manifest.
The question behind the sutra is whether the world we make in sleep is real, a true creation of the self, as the previous sutra's opponent suggested. Badarayana answers no. The dream is maya, meaning an appearance with no real substance behind it. His reason is that its nature is never fully shown. Shankara explains what 'fully' covers: the right place, the right time, the right causes, and non-contradiction, meaning the experience is never cancelled later. A dream fails each test. Chariots and roads cannot fit inside a sleeping body. The sleeper cannot cross hundreds of miles in a moment, and wakes up in the same bed. Onlookers see him lying there. Shankara also reads texts that speak of the dreamer going outside the body as figurative. For Shankara, then, the dream has no trace of ultimate reality. Ramanuja read this part of the sutras differently, holding that God creates dream objects for each dreamer.
Think of a stage set built for a film: a grand palace front, painted wood held up by braces. From the camera it looks like a palace. Walk around the back and there are no rooms, no floors, no roof. The dream is like that front. It shows enough to convince while you are looking, but it lacks the depth of place, time and cause that a real palace has.
Sleep science describes dreaming as brain activity during sleep, mostly in REM stages, producing images and stories while outside input is largely shut out. This agrees with the sutra's observation that the sleeper stays in bed and nothing physical travels. It also fits the point that dreams are loosely tied to time and place and often break the rules of waking life. Where the sutra differs is its aim: it uses these same tests to mark dream off from waking, not to doubt waking too; that further move comes only in later, broader Advaita teaching. Whether waking experience is likewise appearance is a matter of philosophy, and science has no way to settle it. Idealists and realists still disagree, and the question stays open.
