Narada Bhakti Sutras 79

Meaning · English

At all times, and with every feeling of the heart, God alone is to be worshipped, free from anxious care. When He is praised and sung, He soon shows Himself, and lets His devotees know His presence.

Three words carry the sutra. Bhajaniya means 'to be worshipped'; it comes from bhaj, to share in, to partake. So worship here is a sharing, not a performance. Sarvabhava means 'with every feeling': love, longing, even restlessness are all brought, not only the calm ones. Nishchinta means 'free of anxious care', without the worry that keeps asking what will become of me. The first clause says when and how: always, with the whole heart, without anxious care, and God alone is the one worshipped. The second clause says what happens. When God is praised, kirtana, He soon appears, and lets His devotees feel Him. The sutra gives no long wait and no hard condition. The text's word is shighram, soon. Why teach this here? The sutras just before it describe a devotee's days: study, good conduct, no moment wasted. A reader might think all that effort must be carried with a tight, worried grip. Narada answers that devotion is not a project to be anxious about. The effort is real, but the heart in it is carefree, because the one worshipped answers praise. What it asks of the listener: bring the whole self, at any hour, and let praise be the ordinary way of reaching God. Worry is set down, not made into another duty.

A child calling out for a parent in a crowded market does not rehearse a speech or fret over the right words. The call itself is enough, and the parent turns at once. Praise is the call; God turning toward the devotee is the parent's quick answer.

1. Pick one fixed time today, such as when you wash your face in the morning or when the kettle boils. 2. For five minutes, say or sing aloud a few lines of praise to God, in any language, in your own words if you like. 3. When a worry arrives, do not argue with it. Say the next line of praise instead. 4. Afterward, note one small thing: did the worry feel lighter, or only quieter? Just notice.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at night while her son is in surgery. She cannot do anything. Her mind runs the same fears in circles, and her hands will not stay still. The sutra offers her one plain act. She can praise God, softly, with whatever she feels, fear included, since the text asks for every feeling, not only calm ones. Step by step: she begins a line of praise she knows by heart; her breath slows to fit the words; the circling thoughts get less room because the mouth and mind are busy with something else; and she is no longer alone with the waiting, because the text teaches that the one praised draws near. Ordinary experience confirms that steady, rhythmic words and a slowed breath settle a racing body, and that waiting is easier when the mind has somewhere to rest. The limit is plain. The sutra does not promise the surgery will go well, and it does not take the fear away. It does not replace the surgeon, or a doctor for her own sleeplessness or panic if those grow heavy.
