Five Quiet Virtues

Meaning · English
Nonviolence, truth, purity, compassion, faith in God, and the other such virtues of character are to be carefully and steadily kept by the devotee.
Narada names a handful of qualities and asks that they be guarded. Ahimsa is nonviolence: not wishing harm on any living thing, in act or word or thought. Satya is truth: speech and life that match what is real. Shaucha is purity, meaning cleanliness of body and also of mind and motive. Daya is compassion, feeling another's hurt as worth answering. Astikya is faith, a settled trust that God is and that devotion is not wasted. The word 'adi', meaning 'and so on', tells us the list is a sample, not a fence. The closing word, paripalaniya, means to be tended all the way round, the way one watches over a young plant or a flame in the wind. Why teach it here? The sutras just before speak of argument, of study, of using every moment. A reader might ask whether feeling for God is enough on its own. Narada answers that love of God is held up by ordinary goodness in how one treats others and keeps one's own house. These are not rungs to climb past. They are the ground the devotion stands on. What he asks of the listener is care and steadiness: keep these, keep them continually, and do not let them lapse when the mood of devotion runs high or low.
A clay lamp burns steadily only if someone keeps the oil filled, trims the wick and shields it from draughts. The flame is the love of God. The oil, wick and shelter are these plain virtues, quietly tended so the light does not gutter.
1. Tonight, pick one of the five: not harming, truth, purity, compassion or faith. 2. Tomorrow, watch for it once in a small moment, such as a sharp reply held back, an exaggeration left out, or a tidy corner of your room. 3. Before sleep, spend one minute noting whether you kept it, without scolding yourself either way. 4. Repeat with the same virtue for a week before choosing another.
A bus driver, tired at the end of a long route, is cut off by a car and feels his hand tighten on the horn. The verse speaks to that instant. It asks for nonviolence kept steadily, so the answer is already chosen before the anger arrives. Step by step: he notices the heat in his chest, lets the horn alone, and lets the next passenger board with a plain greeting. Compassion then has room, since the other driver may be late for a hospital. Ordinary experience confirms that habits kept in small moments are the ones that hold when we are tired, and that a vow made only in calm tends to give way under pressure. Truthfulness and cleanliness work the same way, as daily practice and not occasional effort. The verse does not promise that anger will not rise, that others will treat him kindly in return, or that the day will be easy. Nor does it replace rest or medical care for a man who is truly worn out. It asks only that the virtues be tended again and again.
