Meaning · English

Texts on devotion are to be reflected upon, and the actions that awaken devotion are to be done. Pleasure and pain, wishes and gains are given up. Time is waiting to be used, so not even half a moment is to be spent in vain.

Three key words carry the sutra. Shastra means a text that instructs; bhakti-shastras are the writings about loving devotion. Mananiya comes from manana, to turn a thing over in the mind until it is understood, not merely read once. Karma here means action, specifically the actions that make devotion grow. Narada first asks for two things together: think over the devotional texts, and do the works that awaken devotion. Knowing without doing stays thin, and doing without understanding drifts. Then he says pleasure and pain, wishing and gaining are to be set aside. These are the usual things that pull a day apart: chasing what is wanted, dreading what hurts, counting what was won or lost. Last, he says time is waiting, and not even half a moment should go to waste. The reason is practical. Having just told the devotee not to lean on argument, Narada points to where the energy should go instead: steady study and steady practice, with no hour handed to craving or worry. Time is the one thing a devotee cannot recover once spent. The sutra asks the listener to treat each stretch of the day as something to be used for devotion, however small it is.

A farmer with a small field and a short rainy season does not wait for a better mood. Every dry hour goes to sowing. The field is the day, the rain is the limited time, and the sowing is study and devotional work.

1. Pick one fixed ten-minute slot today, such as right after waking or just before the evening meal. 2. In that slot, read a few lines from a devotional text and then sit quietly turning them over: what do they ask of me? 3. Do one small act that follows from them before bed, such as a kind word, a prayer, or a chant. 4. Notice when a wish or a worry pulls you away from the slot, and simply return to it.

A man waits in a hospital corridor for his father's test results, scrolling his phone, rehearsing good news and bad. Forty minutes pass and he cannot say what he did with them. The sutra would change that corridor in small steps. He would notice that hoping and dreading are filling the time. He would put the phone down and take up one thing he has already chosen, a few lines of a devotional text or a short prayer, and turn it over slowly. When his mind runs ahead to the result, he would bring it back to the lines. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind with a set task is less tossed about by waiting than one left open to every fear. The sutra does not promise good results, ease the fear, or replace the doctor who will explain what the tests show. It offers a way to spend the minutes before that conversation.
