Seeing Others as Yourself
Bhagavad Gita 6.32
Meaning · English
One who sees all beings everywhere by the measure of himself, equal in their joy and equal in their sorrow, Arjun, is held to be the highest of yogis.
Three words carry it. Aupamya comes from upama, a comparison: measuring by likeness, with oneself as the yardstick. Samam means equally, on the same level for everyone, with no one sorted higher or lower. Yogi is one who is joined, steady and whole in how he lives, not a person of special postures. Krishna tells Arjun that the highest yogi looks at any being, anywhere, and takes his own heart as the measure. He knows how much he wants joy and dreads sorrow, and he finds the same wanting and dreading in them. Whether the other is glad or grieving, he sees it as he would see his own. The reason follows from the verses just before, where Krishna describes a yogi who sees one reality in all beings. Such seeing cannot stay in the head. It shows in how a person regards the pleasure and pain of others. It also answers Arjun's moment, since he stands ready to fight people he knows. What it asks is a change of seeing first, and conduct after. Shankara reads it as the root of non-harm: wanting no pain himself, he sees that none should be given to others. Ramanuja reads it as seeing every self as equal in nature to his own. Madhva reads it together with the preceding verses, as the vision of the Lord present in all.
In a waiting room, a man hears a stranger's child cry, and his own shoulders tighten as though it were his child. He did not reason his way there. The other's pain simply felt near. The highest yogi has that nearness toward everyone, not only toward his own people.
1. Today, when someone near you is upset or delighted, pause for one breath and ask what that would feel like inside you. 2. Before a sharp reply, ask once whether you would want to hear those words in that tone. 3. When someone shares good news, let yourself be glad for a full minute, as if it were yours. 4. Tonight, think of one person you were curt with and write a single line on what their day may have held.
A landlord is on his way to collect rent from a tailor who has asked for more time. He is already irritated, rehearsing what he will say. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in small steps. He first notices his own irritation and where it comes from: his own loan payment is due. Then he asks what the tailor's morning is like, and finds the same fear he carries, only with a different bill. The tailor's worry stops being an excuse and becomes a plain fact about another person, measured by his own. He may still ask for a date, but he asks it as one worried man to another. Ordinary experience confirms that picturing yourself in another's place softens the voice. The verse does not promise that the rent will arrive, that the loan will shrink, or that he must forgive the debt. Seeing alike does not settle the money. It settles how he stands in front of the man.
