Anchored While Acting

Bhagavad Gita 6.31

Meaning · English

The yogi who is established in oneness and worships me as present in every being stays in me, in whatever way he lives and acts.

Three words carry the verse. Bhajati comes from a root meaning to share in, to serve, so worship here is closer to staying in relationship than to ritual. Ekatva is oneness, from eka, one: seeing a single presence behind many faces. Vartate means to stay, to dwell, to go on being. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person who worships him as the one present in every being, and holds that oneness steadily, dwells in him. This holds sarvathā, in every kind of condition and conduct. The verse closes a gap that Arjuna is about to feel: he assumes a person of such vision must withdraw from ordinary life. Krishna answers that the dwelling does not depend on what the hands are doing. A yogi may be a soldier, a cook or a king, and the anchor stays. Shankara reads the oneness as the knower's identity with the one reality. Ramanuja reads it as devotion to the Lord who lives within every self. Madhva reads it as the Lord's presence in all beings, with the devotee still distinct from him. On any reading, the verse asks the listener to let vision and worship hold steady beneath daily action.

At a crowded fair, a child lets go to run, buy sweets, point at the swings, laugh at the puppets. Through all of it a thin string ties her wrist to her mother's. Her activities keep changing; the tie does not. The yogi's many actions are the running, and the steady sense of the one presence is the string.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, a commute, or a phone call, and before it begin, pause for ten seconds and remember that the same life looks out of every person you will meet. 2. Partway through, pause again and notice whether that remembrance is still there. 3. If it has gone, return to it without scolding yourself, and carry on with the task. 4. In the evening, recall one moment when it held, and note what you were doing.

A school bus driver is stuck behind roadworks, ten minutes late, with twenty children shouting and one crying in the back. His jaw is tight and his voice is about to snap. Krishna's teaching here is that the yogi's dwelling in him does not wait for a quiet hour, and holds through every kind of action. For the driver, the first step is small: he remembers that the crying child, the impatient parent at the next stop and he himself are the one presence worshipped in every being. Then he lowers his voice and speaks to the child by name. Then he drives the same road with the same hands. The traffic is unchanged, but the manner of acting is different. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who stays steady inside is easier to be near, and easier to be. The verse does not promise the road will clear, the child will stop crying, or that grief, illness and tiredness will lift. Nor does it replace a doctor when the strain is more than a bad morning.
